The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
There are 9 new drivers this weekend, and most of them are 'mentored' by one of us. So how about a "Who can get their 'little buddy' to do better than everyone else's" competition? What do you think?
Rules:
1. No young kart racers allowed. They have to be a bunch of amateur geezers like us. If your little buddy has ANY racing experience, you guys are not eligible.
2. There are no other rules. Just please try not to kill your little buddy.
I can just see Todd cringing...

I'm not cringing, I think it's great! Like Sy says, just don't kill your little buddy (I'm going to love him, and hug him, and feed him.....) Lost one, so we are down to eight. As far as I know there are no go karters, but pretty big mix of guys. Anywhere from 23 yrs old to 54, so you might have to come up with some sort of handicap system.
If you want to talk cringing, Monday during the corporate, I will be cringing!

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Let’s do it! And since we all know the older guys just don’t have the same quickness as the young guns, a Masters’ newbie should get some sort of handicap; let us say 10 seconds reduced from their final total time? Also, since Michael is giving his protégé pointers on the fine art of the “clearly it was my line” concept, he should be penalized a stop-and-go prior to starting the race.

You don't think I have a "little brother" do you? They tried that with me at VIR... I so scarred the guy, he hasn't been heard from since.
Not to mention, he would have needed about 10 seconds per turn, not per lap!

Picking up the ten seconds per turn would not have been a problem using the proven "clearly it was my turn" concept. The difficult part is teaching him not to be seen.

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Ok, how about some more details here:
1. You get the same points your little buddy gets in each race:
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 10
4th - 8
5th - 5
6th - 5
7th - 4
8th - 3
9th - 2
10th - 1
2. You get a one point credit (per race) for each '5 Year Increment' your driver is older than the youngest of the drivers. For example, if the youngest driver is 22, and your driver is 102, you automatically win.
3. There are no other details. I'm wasting far too much time on this friggin' site. Who started this thing anyway? That guy should be flogged.
Todd, can you please post the mentor/little buddy assignments? And can you hand out one of those spare awesome trophies (not one of the puny third place ones) to the winner? The little buddy gets nothing of course. The mentor is everything.

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Since when has age been a handicap? Don't we keep getting faster with age? We'll eventually pass the youngsters. Mark and John just haven't been at it long enough in the National Championship.

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Ok, another awesome weekend and another 'Challenge' met.
Here were the mentor/little buddy assignments:
Steve Berry was mentored by David Casey
Colin Lawrence declined having a mentor (this guy's smart!)
Keith Lorentzen was mentored by Auriemma (ineligible as he's an experienced racer)
Eric Wittenberg was mentored by Aryeh
James Popovich was mentored by Dom Bastien
Wayne Schultz was mentored by Matt Franc
John Sawruk was mentored by Bill Hammer
So the competition comes down to the following members/buddies:
David - Steve Berry
Sy - Wittenberg
Dom - Popovich
Matt - Schultz
Hammer - Sawruk
Please email me or post your guy's finishing positions and ages so I can tabulate who the winner is. By the way, MJA gets special mention (even though he's ineligible) for thoughtfully guiding his little buddy to $27,000 in car damage in his first day. Way to go!
----------------------
RESULTS (Tentative/To be Updated)
Sy - Wittenberg (8th Place/4th Place - Age: 38) = 11 Points
David - Steve Berry (10th Place/11th Place - Age: ?) = 1 Point
Dom - Popovich (2nd Place/2nd Place - Age: ?) = 24 Points
Matt - Schultz (5th Place/10th Place - Age: ?) = 7 Points
Hammer - Sawruk (13th Place/13th Place - Age: ?) = 0 Points

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Nothing suceeds like excess!
The kid thought he could overdrive the car the way he does a kart. After some feedback (mostly by Skippy guys, I admit) and reflection, he got his head screwed on right.
Shrugged off the damage (caused both by crashing and talking to me...) and WON BOTH OF HIS RACES!
So there!

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
My guy, John Sawruk, is 34 years old. There must be a point or two there. But here's the thing. In his very first race, he crashed out of DFL. Don't I win for that??

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Bill, if YOU crashed out of DFL than maybe, but you didn't, so no. You'll get a couple (if you're lucky) of points for age, but that's it. So far, Dom's guy seems to be the youngest at age 28, so you'd get one point there.

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
I just heard back from Dom, and he said that his guy doesn't have any race experience. So it looks like he's going to be the clear winner whatever the ages are of the rest of the guys.
But is there any way we're gonna let Dom win this contest? Especially after that 'Dom' move, stopping on the straight and throwing away the race win? HECK NO!
So, Dom, you're ineligible! Why? I have no idea! You just are! Todd, can I have the trophy please? I won this thing fair and square.

Re: The 'Little Brother' Challenge @ 2004 Lime Rock Finale
Now so fast. OK - my guy is 44, so he gets Masters points. He finished 10th in his first race, but he should get extra points, since when the green flag fell he was still in WEST BEND! And I taught him the "secret sauce" start. Second race, 11th, but he should get extra points for using the apex at turn-one for both his braking point and turn-in (a lot of whoooos from the crowd, including his wife).
