East Invades South (Sebring Race Weekend)

OK, back to reality, i.e. Skippy Racing. Let's get a group of eastern series TJR drivers and kick some southern butt @ Sebring, 2/18 - 2/20. I'm in, who else. Never raced there, but in certainly looks picturesque (gag me). February, sunny and 80 degrees, a nice primer to our season.

I'll be there, and I'll be bringing MPowa along, and there will be a big party Friday night for MPowa's BDay (34th?). Drinks are on me!

Re: East Invades South (Sebring Race Weekend)

Unfortunately I will not be at Sebring for the February race weekend, and sad to miss drinks with Sy & company . A word of caution for Phobos about the weather -- I did my three-day Skippy racing school at Sebring in January a few years back. The sun hardly ever came out and temps never got above the low 50s. It can get mighty chilly in them thar orange groves.

Bring it on, Eastern guys...

Seriously though, us Southern guys would love to have you down here. I think some of the Western guys might come down for Sebring too.

Re: East Invades South (Sebring Race Weekend)

I will be there along with some guy by the name of "Craig Who" . I this becomes a East vs Southern deal then I am a Southern Guy. No disrespect to the Eastern boys but I started my Skippy Career in FLA.

Not much to do in Sebring, not much to look at, long ride from Orlando Airport though the Orange Groves and not many resturants.

BUT ONE HELL OF A GREAT PLACE TO RACE!!

O Sebring

You may have started there, but you have more Eastern Region scaples than Southern, that should count for something.

Re: East Invades South (Sebring Race Weekend)

I did my 3 day there in February '01, weather perfect. A great place for a school since they use the gigantic back runway and lay out part of the course on it. Worlds largest skidpad, perfect for really testing the envelope as a student.

Did a race weekend there February '03, weather perfect. Ran the full course, love it, gotta drive it at least once in your life.

A video of Bobo racing there a couple years ago is online here. It will give you a view of the track from the drivers seat during a race (very long vid). For the quick/comedic view, see Bobo's version here.

I only raced the full course that one weekend, it's an amazing track but even more interesting is the history that permeates the place. Yes, it's in a God-forsaken part of Florida but so what? You will have a race weekend you will never forget, do it. Dinner at Chicanes at the Inn on the Lakes is a good time.

Have fun.......

I was just there testing last week. Sunny, 80 degrees. One of my favorite tracks. 17 turns and they're all different and technical. Very physical track. The Mexican resturant is the best IMHO. Great blackend fish fahjhitas (sp?). Sounds weird, but great. Chicanes is good too.

cdh- great description of a race weekend here in SUNNY Sebring, Florida! It almost makes me want to live there. Oh wait, I do.
Sounds like the "unofficial" East meets South weekend is going to be awesome. I hate to miss out so I'm going to join you boys in the fun. Add one more to Team South.

The RT-2000 in-car, steering wheel mounted, full size keyboard has emerged from R&D and needs some track testing. Guess I better go down to Sebring and check it out...
Another Easterner comin' atcha'

I see that CDH's "Worlds Largest Skidpad" photo, linked earlier in this thread, also appears to contain evidence of "The Worlds Largest Burnout" rising just past the ridge on the far side of the skidpad? Testing of those new highly rated BF Goodrich tires, perhaps?

I have to fly up to South Carolina on Sunday for two days of testing, but I still may show up since I'm flying out of Orlando and Sebring is on the way. I probably be there on Sunday, but not sure on Saturday. I love the Memorial races. Lets get a 30 car field and start in inverse order!!

And let's let those who want run Formula Dodges (i.e., School Cars). If both cars are on treads, I'd like the school car please.

Hahah, John you're always trying to get them to let you race the school cars! Sounds like fun, perhaps a standing start in the memorial race as well? Or an Enduro? Or Both?

Kids,

Anyone who wants TRIPLE SPLIT TIMES at Sebring better go out and get the new Mycron Light TG. I'm bringing my two new split beacons and we'll have some sweet go-fast data to use.

Re: East Invades South (Sebring Race Weekend)

If we discover, (no thanks to the Mycron weasel who stiffed Sy's inquiry) that my XT Racing Ultra-lap switch-able beacon is compatible with your split beacons, (We do know the start/finish beacon is compatible) then we can have QUADRUPLE SPLIT TIMES at Sebring. Not a bad thing at so large a track.

If anyone else is using an XT Racing Ultra-lap timer please let us know, so we can pool split beacons if they are not compatible with the Mycron.

Lap timers.... there are 17 corners and each of these you will need to step on the brakes. you should get segmint beacons.

And at which of those 17 corners will you be applying the brakes? :-)

Or, better yet, lets take brakes completely out of the picture and race Segways in full nomex and helmets instead of RT's. The grid and pace lap photo would be memorable. Use hour glasses as lap timers and place Segway battery chargers with minibars strategically around the track. We'd all get a lot more track time, (couldn't really call it seat time) and move the finish line to the Chateau Elan swimming pool at the turn 7 hairpin. Yee Ha :-)

DD - You've lost it! Go out and get some fresh 2 degree air. I think you could really use it right now.

That's what we've got. I have two segment beacons, so that should give us three individual sectors. Just like F1! Matt, got any ideas where we should put them?

Sy-ster... I beg to differ. A good workout and brisk walk in that 2 degree air inspired the Segway post. Go figure.

If those split beacons aren't compatible with my Ultra-Lap I'll know exactly where to put 'em.

I break at each corner, the question is for how long and how hard. Ask Duerson.... he breaks longer and harder then he should.
Trust me you guys will love the track but with 17 corners you could be 2 seconds off the first time out. We will be there to help.

Ok, I'm starting to get nervous... I'm on the waiting list for the two main hotels in Sebring (Chateau and Inn on the Lakes) but I'm worreid about getting a room. Apparently there is some big bike race there that weekend too? My dad has been looking for rooms too, but everything else is booked up too.

Great...

Did anyone double book? My dad and I need a room for the weekend, and I'm afraid the we might not mke it off the waiting list.

Geeze, you are worried about being on a waiting list for a room at two of 100 hotels within a 15 mile radius of the track. Try being #17 on the waiting list for the Sebring race weekend. Okay I admit this Skippy Girl had a blonde moment and forgot to book her spot in the race weekend, even though she was trying to convince all of her friends back East to sign up early. I didn't expect it to sell out! I would have missed the number seventeen spot had it not been for TJR.com. I read the news here and promptly called my CSR to put my name on the list.

For all of you other reservationally challenged here are some hotels:

Banyan Bay Club (863)382-8836
Comfort Lodge (863)382-1148 (Skippy staff is staying here for the 12hr.)
Lake Grassy Motel (863)465-9200
Kenilworth Lodge (863)385-0111
All mom n' pop 'kinda places, but other than the "Big Two" it's all you've got.

During one of last year's Memorial races, there was a knockdown fight between Leo Maia, Matt Franc, Marco Andretti, myself, and 20 others. At the start I went 20th to 5th by turn 3, Matt wenth 16th to 3rd by turn 3, Marco went 9th to 2nd by turn 3. The rest of the race was side by side for the top 5 until I suckered Matt Franc into a 4-off with three corners to checker, then got myself suckered into P2 by Marco. Gee, I should have known that was a premonition of 2004.

This year, Varsha will have something for everyone. Matt, where will you finish in this year's Memorial?

Those of you who are racing Sebring 12-hour track for the first time, and you plan to do extra sessions, remember to request early. Being a sold-out weekend, extra sessions may be harder to come by. Just a word to the wise...

This is one of the best tracks to learn to drive and to race. Tons of variety, and two of the best/hardest turns in North America.

Hmm... an enduro, at a historic racetrack , in the school cars, with a standing start? That would be MAD fun!!
