Each year, many rumors often get floated around the American Le Mans Series paddock. Some, of course are just hearsay, but others sometimes come to fruition. One of the more hotly contested topics as of late has centered on the status of B-K Motorsports, the Mazda-supported LMP2 team. Word had originated that the Wisconsin-based team would be taking delivery of a new car before seasons out.
This week, the speculation became fact when Mazda confirmed to British weekly
Autosport that the team would indeed be debuting a brand-new Lola B08/80 Mazda at the Petit Le Mans. And just a few days later, SPEEDTV.com’s Marshall Pruett published an interview with Mazda Motorsport’s Manager, John Doonan, revealing the team’s goals with the new car. Now, in a Trackbytes.com exclusive, we’re able to give you a sneak peek at the official livery of the No. 8 BP Lola B08/80 Mazda.
The Lola B08/80 is an evolution from the ultra-successful B07/40 chassis that teams like B-K campaigned for the last two seasons. Speedy Racing Team Sebah has run the first of these brilliantly looking Lola Coupes in Europe. The Swiss team’s Judd-powered example has been able to match the pace of the Porsche RS Spyders in the European-based Le Mans Series on occasion, finishing second in class in its debut race at Monza in April. The Mazda MZR-R powerplant installed in the B08/80 should provide similar, if not better results, given its adaptability to many North American circuits. This all adds up to very exciting times for the team and fans of the brand.
Thanks to John Doonan and everyone at Mazda North America and B-K Motorsports for giving us the opportunity to exclusively showcase this image. The highly anticipated debut of this Lola Coupe will come at the Petit Le Mans on Oct. 1-4. Trackbytes.com will continue to follow developments of this program in the lead up to the 1000-mile enduro.
