20 Questions - What INSANE car did I drive yesterday?

I'm not usually one to brag, but yesterday I had the opportunity to drive the most insanely fast car ever, with Butch Leitzinger sitting alongside. 20 questions to figure out what this vehicle is?

1. Was it faster than a "New York Grand Prix" kart?

The way this is phrased it is a very small menu

Veyron
McLaren F1
Pagani Zonda
Saleen S7
Ferrari Enzo
Koenigsegg CC
Porsche CGT
MB SLR

My guess? the McLaren..

Re: 20 Questions - What INSANE car did I drive yesterday?

Nope, its not a McLaren F1 and unfortunately not a DP, either. So (GONG sound here), you guys are both out. Isn't that the way it's supposed to work in 20 Questions?

Doug-E, yes I drove it. Butch took me around for a few miles to show me what is what, etc, and then let me go at it. The frickin' thing was like driving a freight train with an Apollo rocket engine strapped on the back.

Sy, where did this life-altering experience take place? On public roads or a closed circuit?

Public roads. Down the Merritt from Greenwich, across 287, up the Hutch and then through Round Hill Rd.

I think that's a huge clue - but I am out of this, I bet I know

Re: 20 Questions - What INSANE car did I drive yesterday?

Yup, VEYRON!

My quick review:

The interior was very nice, very elegant, but pretty understated considering it’s a $1.1 million car. I was expecting outrageous finishes and jewels, something like a Zonda would have. But it wasn’t like that.

My general take on the car is that it drives like a freight train powered by a pair of Apollo rocket engines. It was so fast that the first time I tried to floor it I actually had to force myself to put my foot flat.. The thing has 4 wheel drive, and the traction control was still going crazy with the car shimmying left and right (but laterally, not just at the back), from first gear through 3rd or 4th (that’s all I got up to under full acceleration) and from 4k to redline (7.5k?) in each gear. NUTS. You can clearly tell that this car is capable of going 254 mph.. It’s just insane. I bet you that it’s as quick to 100 mph as an F1 car.

The gearbox is a DSG unit, and it's perfect. Too perfect. Shifts are instantaneous and silky smooth, to the point that you feel and hear nothing. Supremely comfortable and capable, yes, but also somewhat passionless. I even prefer my car's much rougher SMG transmission, where it feels and sounds like a gearbox making proper shifts should – pretty quick, with nice big blips on the way down, and a small kick on upshifts. The engine was also too quiet.

Handling-wise, while it had good grip, you could also feel the mass of the car. I think it weighs 5,000 pounds or something like that, and the suspension was very stiff (I guess that’s the way they control that amount of mass), so I was pretty uncomfortable throwing it around corners hard under heavy rain with standing water everywhere. If it got sideways on me from a puddle or from a bump, I was worried that kind mass would just keep it sliding.. And that would be a bad thing!

So overall, it seems like it’s ideally suited to doing absurdly high speed highway runs from point to point in complete comfort, and is impractical for all else.

Re: 20 Questions - What INSANE car did I drive yesterday?

when you said freight train I knew it had to be the Bug (heavy car). How did it look in the paint?
We know how you felt about its styling in an earlier post

I also get the missed clue award - you said "with Butch Leitzinger sitting alongside" which is impossible in the McLaren....doh!

It looks much better in person. The color of this car (black with burgundy accents?) was very understated, which was nice, because I don't think this car really works as a 'LOOK AT ME!!' gold-chain wearing, "I want to buy me a Lamborghini Countach!" type of car. It really is meant for the guy who just wants to break the speed record on 684 on his way to Ralph's house, but without too much attention.

Good thinking Sy! We much prefer you as a very adapt race driver enthusiast than an undercover brother. We'll leave such supercar-crashing foolishness to the untrained movie actors.
