So, you think you're good at math!
OK kids, here's a quiz.
Question #1
Sy shows up at a brand new track in Connecticut that is exactly one mile around. He enters a 2 lap race. He averages 30 MPH for the first lap. How fast does he have to do the second lap to average 60 MPH for the whole race?
Question #2
Bob Manzella and Donald MacDonald go for a 60 mile ride each in his own cars. Bob's K-car gets 30 MPG, Donald's turbo Porsche gets 10 MPG. What is the average miles per gallon for the 2 car fleet?

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Hi Oldman,
For the first question, there is no speed fast enough. The first lap took him two minutes. If he is to average 60 mph for two miles, then he needs to do the two laps in a total of two minutes. Those two minutes were consumed by the entire first lap. Not even Sy can go one mile in zero time.
Perhaps a better question is ... Sy goes to a karting track that he has never seen before, does sub-46 seconds, and repeats the feat two days later. How does he do that?
For the second question, the two cars cover a total of 120 miles, use 8 gallons of gas in the process, and therefore average 15 miles per gallon.

You people sat in front of me in middle school.
If Oldman left the start/finish moving clockwise at 85 mph and Watertownnewbie left the same point moving counter-clockwise at 35mph, what area will the shrapnel cover at the apex of turn three?

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
So here's the deal - You're in a boat in the middle of Sy's hugh in-ground swimming pool. On the side of the pool there is a mark showing the water level in the pool to be at a certain height. In the boat you have an anvil. For reasons know only to you, you throw the anvil into the water. The question is - does the height of the water go up, go down or does it stay the same?

Just to be clear on the question, is there anyone in the boat with me, say for example John Mayes, and is he tied to the anvil when I throw it into the pool?

somehow i get the feeling that you're not asking that to know how much water is displaced, but rather to know if john mayes will sink to the bottom of the pool tied to an anvil...

What's with posting a math question when I'm barely back from Road America? Anyway, consider this question of my own, which has the same answer as yours ...
Put some ice cubes in a glass that is sitting on a flat table. Pour water into the glass until (and only until) the water level is exactly at the rim of the glass. At this point, the ice cubes, being less dense than the liquid form, are floating at the top of the water, and a side view would show that the tops of the cubes are above the rim of the glass.
When the ice melts, does the water overflow?

One equilibrium is the same as another. It stays at the mark on the side of the pool. (Same as the water level remains at the rim of the glass.)

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Hey WTN:
One for my side! The water level goes down!!!
When the anvil was in the boat it displaced its weight in water. While sitting at the bottom of the pool it does not desplace its whole weight in water. Therefore the level of the pool water goes down.
OLDMAN
PS Please give this some thought before responding.

Yep, I see it now. Start with an empty pool. Drop in the anvil. Water goes up a bit (equal to the volume of the anvil itself). Take the anvil out and float it on top of the water. Water goes up a lot (equal to the amount of water displaced, and water being less dense than the anvil, it takes a bigger volume of water than the volume of the anvil).
Nice problem.

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Try this one -
Every day an air delivery company flies the same 1,200 mile trip from Connecticut to Wisconsin (2,400 mile round trip) delivering parts for bent race cars. Their planes travel at 600MPH. For the last week the planes have had calm air, today however, there is a 200 MPH wind blowing west to east. The question is - will the (round-trip) flight take more time, less time or be the same?

Actually, I do... but you keep getting to them before me. For the record... I missed the anvil one also. The others were easy.

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
OK, let's do one more -
You have a box, and in the box there are 3 coins. One has two heads, one has two tails, and one has a head and a tail. You reach in and take out a coin. It shows a tail.
What are the chances that the other side is also a tail?

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Your chances would be 50% because there is only one other coin with a tail on it. The coin with two heads is not in play.

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
If you just want the probability of the second event, Duo is right.
If you were looking for the probability based on the whole test, the likelihood of a 2nd tail is higher, because the odds are higher that you picked the double tailed coin first.

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Sorry guys, it's 2/3rds!
Look at it this way, your chances of picking a coin that's either two heads or two tails is 2 out of 3. After you pick a coin what's changed? Nothing!
There is a 2/3 rds chance that the other side is a tail. Please give it just a little bit of thought before going with your gut feeling.
Another way to look at it is - there are 3 sides you could be looking at - the tail side of the normal coin, one of the tail sides of the 2 tailed coin or the other tail side of the 2 tailed coin. Again it's 2 out of 3.

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Sorry Oldman. I disagree.
The way you worded it, you were only looking for the probability of the second event. At that point, all you know is that you are looking at a 'tail'. The other side could be a 'head' or a 'tail'. You can't seriously think that the odds are other than 50/50.
Think of it this way. If I suddenly told you that the flip side of the coin was either a 'club' or a 'spade', what are the odds now?

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Look at it this way - you are looking at one of three sides. the other side can be a tail, a tail or a head.
Next week instead of me flagging we'll play this game. Every time the other side is matching you give me $8, and every time the other side is different I'll give you $10 dollars. According to your logic you should make a lot of money. Everyone is welcome to play!
Keep in mind that just because two outcomes are possible it does not mean the odds are 50/50. For example, today I may have sex with Jennifer Aniston or I may not. That does not mean there is a 50/50 chance of it happening.

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Thanks Bob... Think I'll pass on the wager but glad you've found something more lucrative than flagging!
Now I have a poser...
1.) What's the probability of me ing up my lunch while thinking about your unnatural act of an example?
2.) How long will it take to get that frightening image out of my head?

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
At the risk of beating this to death... it REALLY DOES depend on the test.
If you start with two coins 'tails up', and ask me to guess what is on the other side. It is 50/50 to be another tail. In this case, I will gladly take your money.
If you say I have to choose a coin first, and if it is a 'head' then the bet is off... then you are right.
Cheerio!

Re: So, you think you're good at math!
Keep in mind kids the problems being presented here are some of the classics. I did not dream them up, they have been around for decades and will probably continue to stump people for decades to come.
Ok, here's an easy one. The boss of a large company has to hire a receptionist. He interviews three women. He asks them all the same series of question ending with this final question, "How much is 2 + 2?" The first applicant responds by saying "Oh that's easy. it's 4." The second applicant responds by saying " I think it's 22." The third takes a second and responds "Well some would say it's 4, while other may say it's 22, I guess it's all in your point of view".
Who does the boss hire?

Ok kids, it's been a while since our last problem. Here's a new one for you guys looking for a little mental stimulation. Again, I'm going with the classics.
If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs can one chicken lay in one day?
Ted, please give everybody a chance before you answer.

Just for the record, it's 2/3rds of an egg.

At the beginning of summer a lily pad starts growing on the top of a pond. Each day the lily pads cover twice as much of the pond as they did the previous day. On the 80th day the pond is completely covered. How many days did it take to cover half the pond?

15gr=(mph)squared, which according to TE is the formula for determining the proper age of your second wife, may, by substituting the mean surface area of an average northeastern lilly pad for mph and changing the constant '15' to the widely accepted liberal political norm of 87 yields day 79 as the day half the pond will be covered . I think.
