Anyone watching le mans?
not a bad race. it was pretty funny how the commentators were commending alex yoong for his driving and then they come back from commercial and he had just put it into the gravel. it seems pretty early for the sun to be coming up.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
I don't know...before I went to bed at around 3.30 a I put some money on the Audi 7. A few hours and a big hangover later this sucker is 12 laps down, what happened? Our commentators/editors do not seem to value the idea of a recap and indulge in ongoing live feed.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
Ari,
With a six hour time difference at midnight in NY the suns arrival in France would be pretty much on schedule. Murphy's law on Alex.
Was watching at about 10p last night when the lead R10 came in for a gearbox problem.
Had a chance to chat up one of the R8 mechanics last year at LRP who said after they outlawed the quick change rear end, (Entire rear suspension and tranny clip that could bolt off and on in less than four minutes.) the team came up with a hot box that houses a full gear set and oil at race temperature. With the pieces at proper temp they could rebuild the entire gear box in 12 minutes. I didn't stop watch the R10 rebuild but doubt it took more than 12 minutes. They came in with a 4 lap lead and went out with about half that. When you consider how early the R10 is in its development curve, what they are doing is quite amazing. Apparently Peugeot just announced plans to compete next year with a diesel car as well so there might actually be some competition for them.
Watching those yellow Corvettes pass LMP2 cars is fun. After one of the Corvettes made a pass before the Mulsanne, one of the marshals waved the passing flag at the corvette not realizing the LMP2 car was just trying to get some draft with no hope of keeping up.
Love the insomniac hours where they give Varsha, Hobbs and company a rest by plugging into the wonderfully manic radio Le Mans.com feed. They let the radio guys see the video feed and interview people in the states and elswhere by phone.
At 5:30a One Audi R10 leads with a pesky Pescarolo being piloted by Sebastien Loeb in 2nd and the other R10, after several problems, about an hour behind in 3rd. Unless they crash, no one will beat the lead Audi.
Love the look and number of the 007 Jaguar. Just a gorgeous piece. Very close with the Corvette. The 009 Jag is leading but the Corvette is less than a lap behind and closing.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
...at the same time the 24h race of the Nurburgring is going on. It looks pretty much like a Carrera Cup with Porsche being on P1 thru 5. But the party looks more fun than across the border.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
Hah! Right you are... meant Aston... Martin... They do look Jaguarian though. A pair of properly hungry cats... Had the pace but not the reliability. Corvette nipped them at the end when they spent 5 laps in the pits fixing a mechanical problem. (gearbox?... not sure)
Audi really has it worked out. They showed a documentary about the development of the R10. It would make most competitors pack up and go home before even trying. They now own LeMans racing and series with the R10. BTW the last factory race for the R8's will be in two weeks at Lime Rock.
Should be interesting if Peugeot takes the serious run they are indicating next year. May be a coupe. Should be fun whatever they do.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
Kind of want to try out a nice deisel sports car. (no awd) Like the idea of using the cars torque. It would do well on the street. Plus those Audi drivers are getting kind of old, hummmmmmm...

F1 is worried about having mega-money gain a big development advantage in its eighteen-race series, but I wonder how much Audi spent just to win this one race. (And it was impressive, with a solid third-place car too.)

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
It also was apparntly supposed to be a "big new challenge" for them. However, (while I'm sure the people worked hard) seeing as how they dominated Sebering and Le Mans and thoses being the first two races for the R10 it seems that the challenge as not so great.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
That's why it's in everyone's best interest to have Peugeot show up next year with a serious contender. Right now Audi is squashing everyone like a bug.
Varsha, Hobbs and company were talking about all the money they spent just on hospitality and promotion. They are very smart in the way they promote their racing while relating it to their street cars. Very sophisticated marketing.

Re: Anyone watching le mans?
"Re: Anyone watching le mans?" - yes, me live! only watching though - not even the SB shirt & TJR cap could get me a drive! unsurprisingly i snapped a bunch of pics & will post a link when downloaded & sorted.
but what an amazing w/end - a very different experience from anything stateside. for starters 235 thousand spectators - most camping out for 3 or 4 nights. seemed like many more into partying out than racing. i think it wld be close between total beer v. gas consumption!!
as for the race well it was a fantastic display by audi but your boys did great in the other classes. the 'vettes sounding amazing - like an invading force! and don't forget the panoz in the GT class that picked up Don's first class victory. And isn't the farnbacher (sp.?) porsche a US based team?
LRP promises to be a victorious homecoming. BTW is anyone going? I will be in CT that w/end and wld love an excuse to go up.
