A little help here. And, no, I don't know either.

In the track video of the Green Hell - 1967 - the camera car appears to be a Formcar FV. I recognised it by virtue of having stared at a similar front suspension for four seasons. If I'm right, how the hell is it keeping up with a BMW powered Lola? If not, what other cars utilized a VW front end???

Re: A little help here. And, no, I don't know either.

By the width of the tires I'd say you're right. I'd also guess that the driver of the Lola was either laying back to demonstrate the line of the track to the camera car or the Lola driver was still learning the track and the camera car driver already knew the Ring.

You realized how little of the Lola's potential was being used when he got to the long straight and pulled away at an astonishing pace. I'd guess they were staying together for the sake of the camera. It was fun to see how much harder the camera car driver was working to keep up.

What's also striking is how relatively open everything is back then. Now there is much more greenery and trees enclosing the sides of the track.

Re: A little help here. And, no, I don't know either.

Listening to the narration, Hahne in the BMW-Lola is clearly intended to be the subject of the film, demonstrating the line around the course while the FV is the camera car. He had to lay back in order that the slower car could stay with him. That he is nowhere near the limit and also driving in his mirrors is reflected in his darting turn-ins, which are quite hilarious.

The end of Hahne's career is also hilarious:

Name: Hubert Hahne
Nationality: Germany
Date of birth: March 28, 1935 - Moers

BMW's European Touring Car Championship star in the mid-1960s, Hahne drove a Matra-BRM in the Formula 2 class of the 1966 German Grand Prix, subsequently contesting the same event again in 1967 (Lola-BMW) and in 1969 (BMW 269). After failing to qualify his own March 701 in the 1970 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim he instituted legal proceedings against the British constructor, alleging they had sold him a deficient machine. But when March team driver Ronnie Peterson used it to match his own time in a works car round Silverstone, Hahne conceded the point, withdrew the legal action and retired from racing.

Hmmmm. Sounds a bit like the boisterous DOP claims of some drivers who become a little quieter when MHP or BoBo or someone else takes the subject out for a spin to check on things. Or some 15-year-old kid has your car in the next race and gaps the field.

Yup. Up and down the ladder, the song remains the same. "Duuuude, ...it ain't the car."
