Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

I'm in...

10 Day Weather Outlook for Laveville CT

Weather looks sketchy for lapping and practice but it's still far enough out that anything could happen. Temps in the 40's at night and 60's during the day which could mean faster lap times after the track warms out of the 40's. At least we won't need the snow tires.

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

In. You can't miss the finale!

Also, to any and all: After practice on Thursday, beers/soda/wine/appetizers in the infield Chalet. It is one of the houses in the center of the track area on the "hill" looking down on the paddock. We have the place until 8pm. I am hoping we can get the mechanics, corner workers, Skippy personnel, and all of you miscreants there for a pop or two right after practice.

It would be great if we could get the mechanics there so lets keep the cars out of the walls!

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

I'll be at Start Finish each day working alongside Kevin Scott, with 15 other corner workers along the track! Jim, I had heard a whisper about that event-if you're putting it together, THANK YOU! It's especially nice since the track has effectively said to anyone involved with both Skip Barber and Lime Rock Park hoping to attend their end-of-year get-together - which is Saturday during our last races of the weekend in the infield! Even if we're done early (a.k.a. No Memorial), there's the banquet up the road to get to. This, after it was scheduled during on-track activity last year, too...
I'm letting the mechanics and flaggers know now so hopefully we can all crowd that chalet and have a good time.

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

I'll come sliding into the parking lot with all Mini tires squawking in anger getting to the banquet at the last minute, throw DVD to Todd and hit play....

I hope for once to watch the races Sat, but the above description is much more likely.

We don't have anything here yet, either, Doug. I can hear wind, but it isn't even coming through the open windows. The radar looks like it's arcing around us. Wonder how long that will last...

The Hutch (depending on where in NYC you're coming from) to 684 to 22E to Amenia, NY. Turn right at the light to go into Sharon OR go straight at the light to go into Millerton. Either way, you're going to have to arc around to get to the Interlaken (if that's where you're staying). If you take the right at the light and go into Sharon, you can take the back road to LRP (take the first right after you pass the gas station in Sharon, then a left on to White Hollow Rd.).

Are you going to Canaan before or after the track? Either way, your best bet is probably to go past the track (on Rt. 112) and up 7N to Canaan.

I'm not sure which route you would prefer to take, but I can tell you that the route I outlined (which is basically option #1 from Google) is the route Bruce has taken to/from Forest Hills, Queens for the past 30+ years. It takes about 2hrs, and that's driving normally...

That's the route - local knowledge would help getting out of Queens / LGA area and into Westchester Co. Whitestone Bridge from LGA is good, when are you scheduled to land?

I'll venture a guess that would be on two wheels with either a 3 or 4 wheeled vehicle.

Any final report for those who were not there? Summer Series champion? Masters winner? Most improved driver? Anything else of note?

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

In brief, it rained on Tuesday, Wed and half of Thursday. Thursday afternoon it dried out and the track stayed dry from then through Saturday. Everyone was equally short on dry practice.

Lots of great hard fought races in all four groups. Special mention to Stevie D. whose feedback is always spot on and delivered with his patented sense of humor. All the instructors were great but Stevie was extra great.

Hats off to the mechanics and Keith Watts who squeezed in 7 races on Saturday with enough time for everyone to make a banquet that began at 6:30p and ended about 10p. (There were four group races, two masters races and the Tony Curtis Memorial)

Ashley Freiberg won the overall series
Greg Strelzoff won the masters
Pat Daly won the grand masters
Gary Vizioli was voted most improved driver
Luigi Biangardi's pilot was given a trophy for the lowest and loudest private jet flyover at Grattan.

I've forgotten what order the top five were in each category so I'll wait for the results on the Skippy site or someone with a better memory to update me

Doug produced his usual touching and hilarious banquet video with the biggest laugh coming from a Keith Watts cell phone video of a trick he did with toilet paper in an airplane bathroom. You simply have to see it to understand how brilliantly stupid funny it is. Don't want to give it away for those who buy the video.

That's all I know... It was a great season in that we had a bunch of new kids who worked hard and got fast. The Nationals should have even more talent next year.

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

Yes, Gary will receive $3,000 Skippy dollars for his consistent hard work and progress on track this year... Bravo Gary!

And standing ovation to Paul Subject for spear heading the mechanics fund and doing an outstanding job. Final totals weren't yet in but the numbers are also outstanding. Big thanks also to Doug and Steve Welk for their help producing a bunch of great hilarious T-shirts that motivated people to contribute all year.

As usual a small handful of devoted friends did the heavy lifting to do the right thing for the mechanics. We are always grateful to them and to the mechanics for their front line hard work.

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

Sy... Big smiles seeing you and Demi at West Bend during the morning race and always great seeing you in the paddock. :-)

The banquet was great. The room was a little small for our needs so there wasn't much elbow room and their sound system was a joke but both of those obstacles were overcome with grace as Kerry did a great job on point in Todd's absence.

The food was decent, Nick Nick & Keith did a great job with a thankfully abbreviated auction and the awards moved along quickly with humor and emotion capped by one of Doug's signature banquet videos.

The ceremonies/video portion took a little more than an hour and we were done by 10p. home in time to see the end of the Yankee game!

It was an appropriate wrap up for a season of austerity. Lots of laughs and good feelings to take home.

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

I had 4 races this last weekend.

1]
R1,G1 was one of the best races for my season. I had MHP as my radio coach, (I love radio coaching and I love how subtly different Maiman, Slonaker and MHP coach me) and we planned and executed the best race I could do with my abilities at that time (which was to beat Luigi who I was 2 pts ahead of prior to that race)

Ashley spun during quali and caught me from behind but I was unable to stay with her in the draft, but Luigi, who was 1 position ahead of me did. I fell about 5 seconds behind him and then he finally was not able to stay in her draft, and I drove as well as I could possibly drive and slowly caught up to him. Typically, its at this point I make a mistake and increase the gap, yet this time I did not. Its hard describe in words but grinding back those 5 seconds lap after lap by 3 to 5 tenths per lap was one of the most satisfying lapping sequences of my life. BTW, Luigi to his credit made no mistakes either and thus it was an absolutely thrilling feeling to finally close enough to get into his draft. At that point I went from driving at 105% of my ability down to about 70%. I could rest and wait for further directions from MHP. MHP had me just hold station and put pressure on for the next 8 or so laps and at this point I was doing flares and doing feints on Luigi. It was a lot of fun and I greatly enjoy racing with Luigi esp since this is now the second consecutive season that it has gone down to the wire between us.

Anyway, we planned for me to wait to the white flag to pass into turn 1, but MHP, brilliantly made the call to pass one lap earlier because he saw 'aggression' up ahead and said - ok change of plans - go ahead and make the pass NOW!! So I did. It was a burst of adreline going through turn 1 side by side and holding off Luigi. However, now it was Luigi's turn to press and coming out of down hill on the white flag lap he was getting ready to make a go and was on his way to pass me back but then BOOM a yellow flag comes out as MHP and his psychic friends network were correct in calling that something would happen, so Luigi had to back out of his pass.
Seriously MHP made a great call.
I was able to hold of Luigi on the final lap and was able to cross the line a fraction of a second ahead of Luigi. Was amazing and seriously was such a fun and exhilarating race.

I have never driven so many back to back 'quali' style laps in my life.

2]
G3,R1
I just couldnt go home after that first race (esp since it had been 3 months out of the race car) so I just jumped in and raced from the back. It was fun, but I had to go off on downhill as I was attempting a pass and the driver in front of me spun but it was unclear which direction they were going to go. This knocked my car out of alignment and my downhill balance was WAY out of wack.

3]
G1,R2
Car was out of alignment and I had to lift big time on down hill and I just never got going. I was unable to execute any of the plans that MHP was doing because I kept losing time on the down hill. Frustrating race, but I was able to manage to hold on but not move forward. I watched LOTS of exciting action as I saw Jesus take out Thomas and other wild battles in front of me. I just couldnt play in the fun. Kevin beat Luigi to the line by .004 seconds which cost Luigi 2 points which meant that I finished 5th instead of 6th in the championship. Amazing stuff! Thank you Kevin - Ill buy you dinner!

4]
G3, R2
I watched this race from inside of turn 1 and Wow.. fireworks all race long by Dex, Trent, Ludwig, Scott, Carter. It was so fun to watch from there

5]
Masters Race
I moved my parents down to the inside of turn 1 to watch this race, which was an excellent call because they were wowed. They have watched all previous races from up in the tower, but down at ground level at turn 1, 15 feet from the action was a whole new world for them. They loved it! MHP, was VERY gracious and dealt with my Mom's myriad of questions.
We put on a heck of a show for my folks

Onto the race itself, Pat and I discussed and decided against racing from the back and I am glad we did, because it was an even better battle than the one I had with Luigi the day before. I was in the same car, but Joe had strung and fixed the alignment issues so I was once again fast in the downhill.

I made an early pass attempt on Pat, but went really wide in one. I went 3 wheels off the track and having listened to the radio chatter I could hear that there was considerable question over/if I went 4 off. Glad they made the right call. I was down to 6th but pick up the positions quickly and was helped out by a Safety car. I caught up to Pay and watched as both Al and Ludwig spun off in front of us. Both events were very exciting and happened right in front of Pat who dealt with each event calmly and perfectly.

Pat and I were then going TOE to TOE. I was not able to pull passes off on him because he was just too damm good at downhill. I would lose a tiny gap to him in westbend and then not be close enough to make a safe pass. Id close in left hander every time and lose it again in west bend every time. Darn that was frustrating! Eventually Ludwig caught us and I have to say, he can drive. He must be doing downhill flat out because that is where I could see him closing the gap to Pat and I. Unreal!
I let him through and then Pat let him by and so now Pat and I are duking it out for 2nd place, which was fine with me. I was focusing as hard as I could on figuring out what to do to fix my west bend. I couldnt believe that every lap he would pull out a couple of tenths which made passing him into 1 impossible, so I just spent a few laps learning from Pat. Eventually I made some adjustments and was able to hold onto him down into turn one. I started making passing moves from the outside, but just didnt have any clear shot of making it work cleanly. It is not possible to do an up and under on the way to 2 safely, but I was trying.

I look up to check on the lap board and see that we have 2 laps to go out and my heart rate jumps by 25 beats per second and I say to myself it is time for a perfect lap! This time out of downhill I go all the way drivers right, Pat is clean and leaves me a couple of inches to spare on each side and now the braking war is on. I have barely enough distance to get around him and stay on the track. I make it to turn 2 and look up to see the expected pressure to left hander but I was very sad to not see Pat there. I wanted to cross the line in anger with him. He did dive and try to attack but spun - I am very sorry Pat - I wanted to battle all the way to the end.

I have to tip my hat to Pat - what an amazing battle that was.
Thanks for that wonderful battle. All the instructors told me they greatly enjoyed watching us duke it out.

Thanks to everyone again for a wonderful summer series.

Greg

ps. Anyone still reading this? :P

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

YES, read it all, thanks, fun stuff. LOVE the psychic MHP FCY call...very savvy
I had my mom watch outside the old West Bend once, kinda freaked her out! Inside one equally impressive for the uninitiated, as you say, very close, very loud, lots of action, that's cool, glad your mom enjoyed the thrill.

Thanks for the report and congrats on the great racing

Congrats to all the top spots, well done Rising Star Pink Nightmare Rocket Girl Ashley, Master Strelz Daddy, Grand Master Funk DD, Jimmy "OK if I run Ward off in Turn One" Craige, Most Improved Gary Diesel Rules Viz, Speedy Luigi Bagodonuts, Seebass, Albert Rusty Scott Sunoco Camaro Carter...ok, and everyone else...

Fun at banquet, sorry I didn't think to check on the audio plans, after last year with the great AV equip rentals I assumed something similar would be set up (esp since we knew from 2 yrs ago acoustics at CCC are a problem), alas, bad sound didn't help an alrerady troubled video. I think I solved the mystery that kept a lot of good material off the DVD Saturday night, just incredibly frustrating. Too many different video file types from different sources, lots of converting needed, mismatching types can produce unexpected results. When burning, some chapters produced error messages, nothing specific though so could not figure it out in time. Had to bail with an altered (and repetitive) WGI chapter and 2 Nat chapters...also should have ordered chapters differently, put the best loudest stuff at end - I ended it with a whimper, big mistake DVD's will be same as past years, more chapters, better, longer.

Paul GT Captain Canada Subject did an outstanding job collecting for the fund, thanks Paul

Thanks so much to Todd for making it possible and esp to Keith Duke Chester Sanford Watts PLC and Marksman for supplying me with the funny clips, biggest laughs of the night, and Mike Marino and Alex for the tons of incar. Orig version has some great incar that wouldn't burn, will get it figured out, it is so much better. Skip wants it online so it will be soon, keep ya posted, thanks.

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

Greg you are more than kind and you drove a great masters race that fittingly paralleled your season. Do wish we could have had that photo finish. I made two mistakes. First, didn't think you had as good a run as you did on the 2nd to last downhill and didn't go full defensive. Since I'd already made one move I couldn't legitimately make a second one so held my line leaving you room to dive down the inside. Second when you slid wide I tried to tuck inside of you to repass but asked too much of the car and it came around before I could catch it. If I'd tucked in behind you and worked for a good run on the downhill it would have been close one way or the other and a lot more satisfying for us and the spectators. Bummer... Sorry 'bout that... I'll just have to get you next time.

At the start it didn't take Peter or Al long to drive to the front. Thought Jim Craige would be there too but he had an off on the downhill that ended his run early. I knew Peter would be up front quickly as we had a great battle in July that I was fortunate to win and figured he'd be highly motivated to even the score. I'd completely forgotten that Al was in the race and didn't recognize his helmet... Thought one of the kids had jumped in at the back. Then Al slid off of turn one and Peter spun right in front of me in turn two. Peter didn't go four off so he was able to come back a second time and ultimately win. You got second and sneaky fast Paul Subject got third. Other than my bone head move it was a great race.

Btw, quote of the evening goes to Jim Craige upon accepting his Masters Championship trophy for MX 5... Paraphrasing...." Seven years and a couple of hundred thousand dollars later and I still suck!"

Jim, wish I could suck as good as you. congrats!

Absolutely! Like Wally and Divina. First Lime Rock next season, a 5 laps no holds barred shootout between GT and Viz, National rules. The cars are donated by SBRS on the condition that we drivers contribute the equivalent of the cost for donation to the Mechanics Fund!!

Re: Who's Going to the Lime Rock Summer Series Finale?

Thanks guys for the kind words. I was totally shocked when Pat called me Sunday morning with the news. I thought, when he said he was "...calling to congratulate me on.....", he was going to say I managed to get into the top something or other in the Masters or Grand Masters standings. I about hit the floor though when he told me what it was.

I watched some serious, deserving gentlemen receive this in past years. Pat, you come to mind with your progressive, smooth rise to the top, and Greg, you were a model last year for hard, consistent, and incredibly rapid improvement.

Sorry we missed the banquet (Susan's sons wedding in South Carolina had priority of course). Congratulations to some very classy and deserving fellow racers. Ashley, you ran clinics all summer on smoothness, consistency and damn fine racing. Greg, a truly great job, especially being out for several races. (See, getting "older" still has its rewards :-) ). Pat, you did it again, and a fine job it was. Congrats to all in the top finishing positions, this was a great Summer Series, and the races this weekend were some of the best all year.

Captain Canada, I think a 5 lap shootout grudge match should be "different". Not just a standing start, like Ashley and Mike's this weekend, but let's make it interesting. One car goes in the "normal" direction, the other runs Classic Lime Rock in the opposite direction. Best cumulative (lowest) overall lap times wins. Extra points awarded for playing chicken on the front straight (or wherever we meet up) and holding ones line the longest. Even Sid should like this one.

Thanks you! Sucking at this level takes years and years of practice. Not anyone can suck to the power to 2. As in suck^2. If I keep at this, I think I can however just suck to the power of 1.5 (suck ^(1.5)) in another 7 years.

Jim, sorry about that, I missed getting my congratulations to you in my prior post. A well deserved award. If that's sucking race car driving, sign me up for lessons. Great job, and you are loads of fun to watch on the inside of Turn 1.

Thanks too for the Thursday evening gig, greatly appreciated by all.

Another thank you for the Thursday night event.

Also - do you miss racing in the rt cars at all?

I have raced in the mx5's and I do love that but its just not as thrilling as an RT car for me.
