Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

Huge congratulations to Pat! It's been many months since his last race in a Skip Barber car. To shake off the rust and find the speed to beat a few real quick guys was just fantastic to watch. Did I mention he's never driven at Watkins Glen before??!!

The greatest cheer of the weekend was at the podium celebration as he received his 1st place trophy with two much younger drivers with National experience standing on each podium at his side. A special day!

Here's a snap of a podium moment. One possible moral of the story that comes through more clearly in the photo is that every once in a while, talent beats sponsorship. We're all lucky to be there to see it.

Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

It would seem Pat being awarded 2007 "Most Improved Driver" was a good decision. Gotta love the fact the Skippy Bucks prize went to racing at the Glen, life works out sometimes

Listening to the chatter from that race was fun, lots of position changes with Julien, Pat and Thiago...great racing all.

Wow!

I never thought I would ever say that I was more sorry to have missed watching a race than driving in it, but I definitely feel that way now. I wish I could have been there to share in the excitement. An amazing performance! But, the way you've been driving since Sebring last year, I had a hunch this was coming. You just seem to keep getting better every event. Way to go!

As Leland says, awesome to see a plain, undecorated driving suit on the top step of the podium-- talent indeed!

We demand a CWC first-cockpit perspective of the race as it unfolded (and the crushing-er, the better!). Please tell me you had a camera on your car.

Just for the record - Pat was at LRP today (5-26) and jumped into a Miata for the feature. He came in 10th out of 20, and turned similar lap times to those who had practiced in the car. Nice weekend Pat.

WTG guys!!!!!

Thanks Harsha.

In addition to Pat's accomplishment, Doug drove a tough and consistent set of races. His P-2 was hard earned and he never cracked under a lot of pressure. He was driving a hard second race and nearly had another one!

Leland was also blistering fast this weekend and had a couple of unfortunate things get in the way. I will put my money on him that he will be on the podium very soon and frequently.

I was some what off the pace in Group 4 even though I got the P-3. I was part of a huge multi-car hit in an earlier Group 2 race that took my edge off. We were all lucky to walk away with what appears to be only minor issues. I can't say enough good things about the responsiveness of WGI emergency staff and of the whole SBRS family of staff, instructors and drivers.

Took your edge off? Lucky that was all it took off, it was a huge wreck. Chris was in the wrong place for this one, absolutely nowhere to go, KABLAMMO! Set up my camera in T11 about 10 minutes before all hell broke loose, had a clear shot of the mess.

Chris, the fact that you raced in your 2nd double after being blasted in the pile-up was very impressive, and you raced to the podium - big kudos

Very happy for you, you were overdue for a Champ podium, well deserved pal.

Big Congratulations Pat. You certainly deserve the win!!!
Followed Pat on Thursday in the rain. We passed and repassed early in th session. I thought to myself, "Maybe I can keep up with the fast guys" But NOOOOOOOOOOO. Suddenly he just drove off into the distance. When we talked later he said, "My visor was fogged up and I couldn't see."
Shattered dreams. But now I know how far I have to go.
Such a nice guy, Such a nice win!!!!!!! Great stuff Pat!!!

I have the video ready to post, waiting for clearance from all involved, it was ugly, no one seriously hurt, one of the biggest I have ever seen at a SB race.

Story - G2R2, there were two 4 car trains up front. Daly led first foursome, 2nd gaggle was maybe 5 seconds behind. In the second train, 4 cars entered T11 with 2 laps to go, only one car came out (barely).

Waiting for one more OK, then I will post

Actually I will edit up my races, wanna get hold of incar from Al and Brian, add chatter and edit, should be good. Daly's race as well, send in your DVDs.

Congratulations Pat!!! I watched both your races from the bus stop platform and can definitely say you were not shy about taking the spots from those guys. The confidence was very apparent, excellent driving! I'm hoping I can get up there and race with you soon.

Race 2 Group 2:

Leaders in a group of 4 cars nose to tail, dicing and drafting, lead by the indominable Daly Duo;

Second group of four cars nose to tail dicing and drafting as well; a few seconds behind the first pack. Order is LRR, Panzer, Mayer, Moxie aka Leland. Panzer drafts and takes lead over LRR, Mayer and Moxie tuck in for the draft.

Panzer is wide of T-11 Apex and runs out of room at the track out. Multiple hits by all of the four cars in pack two. We are all lucky to have walked away with relatively minor injuries. Hopefully none of the aches and pains turn into anything for any of us.

The video speaks for itself. In lap 1 of the video, I (LRR) am in the blue lead car of pack 2; On lap 2 of the video Panzer is lead red car and I am first car to have an impact at get tossed into pit lane to take a double impact to the blue guardrails, debris flying at me, praying the bouncing tires don't take my head off. Panzer gets wacked at least 2 more times. Mayer is second red car and Moxie the white car.

The quick and professional response of the SBRS staff, fellow racers and family and the WGI emergency crews was fantastic. If there was ever a doubt as to whether this is the real deal...watch this

Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

Another testament to the safety of the Skip Barber race cars.

Glad everyone walked away!

Roger that. After seeing the vid, very happy everyone was ok. Reminds us all that this sport we love carries a risk.
Those cars are very sturdily built. The flying wheels are scary though. One of them gets launched up as high as the top of the bridge, but fortunately none hit anything. But that is a dangerous projectile. I thought I once noticed tethers on the fronts, but I could be mistaken. Gerardo, do the wheels have tethers? If not, shouldn't they?

I could not agree more Harsha. That was my primary concern as I sat there against the guardrail waiting for the dust to settle. It seemed like an eternity for the wheels to get by me.

Would love to know if there is an easy fix for this.

Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

A tribute to the car's robust construction for sure, big hits, very happy everyone OK. Being there just outside T11 rail was alarming. I left camera to vigorously wave at approaching cars to get them to really slow down, this was not a typical yellow. The staff, emergency crews, etc all handled the situation very well.

For anyone who did not meet him at WGI, this is Keith the chassis builder based in Lakeville. We can thank him and the crew for delivering us from evil. Thanks for those sturdy chassis!

First of all, congrats to Pat! Second, Sid, why are you YELLING? Also, if you scroll down to post #11, but only the top 3/4 of the shot, it looks like they are part of the print on the trailer... cool shot.

Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

Thanks for the kind words y'all. This definitely qualified as a big time Nick Nick "Happy Boy" experience. (Even though he was holding down the fort at LRP :-) First time driving The Glen… Blown away. If you haven't raced there yet... Put it on your list... Now!

For those who haven’t been to Watkins Glen, WGI is a huge slice of deep pedigree racing heaven. Legendary F1 drivers competed on this course in the 60's after the original public road circuit (now historically marked on the still public roads around the track) was moved up to its current magnificent location.

Amazing elevation changes with corners of every type that reward technically accurate balanced driving. The sweeping uphill esses let the car dance on its toes inches from the Armco. Don't know anywhere in a Skippy car that gives a more dramatic enduring sensation of speed.
The bus stop, (installed to slow entry speed into the carousel) tests late braking turn-in skills while making the car look like an over-caffeinated water bug skittering around a lily pad.

The laces require sensitive brake release, slow steering and progressive full throttle that slides the car past a descending blind apex to the edge of a track-out rumble strip with up-shift to 4th forcing you to smile in your helmet, talk to god and look forward to doing it again in something over two minutes.

There's so much more to WGI and if you haven’t had the pleasure you'll just have to experience it for yourself.

What we're celebrating here is a world-class racecourse and the Skip Barber system at its best.

This customer arrived at Watkins Glen without a clue about driving the track and after some quality time with the likes of Rob Slonaker, Gerardo Bonilla, Mark Hamilton Peters (MHP) and the cadre of Skippy instructors including Steve DeBrecht, Pete Argetsinger (Who’s dad created racing at Watkins Glen) Jim Pace, Phil Lombardi, Bob Ziegel, John Edwards, Matt Franc, Walter Irvine, Grant Maiman, Steve Welk, Don Harple, Cash Mullen, Joe D’Agostino and Keith Watts the learning curve was accelerated enough to let me create the illusion of competence.

The fun part of doing well is sharing it with every one of the above named people who make it possible. My success is on their backs as these instructors share years of experience I can only hope to absorb and implement.

Thanks also go to the guys who fought so hard and made the battles meaningful in both races. Got to closely inspect the gear bags of Thiago Calvet, Julien Gerbi and Brian Skinner in race one as we ran nose to tail the entire race. Those fast young men taught me how to take positions through the bus stop in race one so I could return the favor in race two. The real thrill was being locked nose to tail in constant battle with them the entire time during race 1 and 2 before finally eeking out a gap before the unfortunate crash at the end of race 2. Most fun I’ve ever had in a race-car.

It's all about having informed witnesses and so many of the usual suspects, new and old were in attendance. Doug Harrison, Lee & Jane Englebardt, Chris Brassard, Nick Spencer, Luca Orlandi, Ron Yarab, Robert Ecklin, Steve Mayer, Ricky Taylor, Tom Goodhardt, George Kline, Fabrice Weill, Gary Vizioli and I'm sure a few more whom I'll ask forgiveness for leaving out.

Great having four nicely populated race groups and unless I’m mistaken most seemed to have others to play with this time. The one group system appeared to be a bit more balanced this time.

For anyone who didn’t hear this the first hundred times I shared it. Way over 30 years ago stood at the top of the esses and watched my friend Jack Elwell lead a big field of SCCA Formula Fords up through the esses for a few laps. It was the only time I ever saw him lead a race and I thought that was pretty cool at the time. When I took the point on the first lap through turn one in race one and led the pack up through those same esses that moment popped back into my head with the smiling awareness that I’d just been granted the privilege of realizing a dream. The weekend only got better from there.

Thanks to the instructors, thanks to the competitors and thanks to the racing gods for treating me so kindly.

Special thanks to the racing gods for smiling on Scott, Chris, Steve and Lee as they found each other in turn 11. Scary moment and so glad all we have to talk about is the strength of the cars and safety equipment.

As usual the last and most important thanks go to all the mechanics and testers who worked like dogs to get a huge mixed fleet of cars from both the East and West Coast dialed in for our races. It rained Wed. and Thursday putting testing way behind schedule. Nobody enjoyed the 40 degree rainy days but the mechanics got to experience it more than the rest of us. Great having Sid there to pick our pockets for the mechanics fund and make us smile. It never feels like a race weekend without a couple of shakedowns by Sid and Scotty Panzer comes in a close second to Chris Brassard's Sid impression.

Shout out's to crafty Doug Harrison for a P2 despite his belief that everyone else was faster than he was. And to Leland for setting fastest lap in one of his races when the karmic banana peel wouldn't let him finish above 5th. To Chris Brassard for getting out of his pinball car in Group 2 and making the podium in Group 4. To Luca for being consistently fast and on the podium in all his races (Winning too!) and to Todd for not putting me in Luca's or Ricky Taylor's race group! :-) And to anyone who thought my learning the track and winning a race was nifty Ricky Taylor saw the track for the first time and proceeded to win once and set track record... Twice!
Plus Keith Watts is so damn good as pit coordinator that we now take for granted his brilliant fair efficiency and wicked sense of humor.

Ohh... And Ron... Sorry to disappoint but that bulge in my suit pocket is my reading glasses. Ha!

Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

So many other thoughts, excitements, discussions, feelings abounding, its easy to miss what Pat's included photograph (and Doug's video clip) so eloquently captures.

Rarely does one drop tires at the entry of Turn 11 and survive without a spin or a big hit. Pat doesn't even lose momentum. He simply adapted to the error and made it part of his racing line.

He has arrived at a greater level of driving that is shown by his calm and calculated lead against young adrenalized drivers at a track he had not raced before, using the first race to learn how to win in the second.

The education system works. Credit to Pat for making the most of it and opening his eyes to the opportunity.

Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

"the karmic banana peel" now that is a classic, is it my imagination or does the word count of
Pat' post keep increasing???

Speaking of banana peels, Bobo had a photo of his ALMS car's 'modified' steering wheel controls at WG. Of the many buttons and controls on the wheel were several with labels for "smoke" "thumbtacks" "oil slick" etc., ala Jame's Bond's Aston DB. There was one label that even Q never dreamed of - "BANANAS"

Can you post it Gerardo? It is a classic.

Videos Re: Watkins Glen '08 Race Weekend - Congrats to DD!

DD has CWC's (crushing word counts), I have CFC's (no, not monochlorodifluoromethane) crushing frame counts. Here is a longish race video edit with some new ideas I was trying. G4R1, not as much action as I would like but the recorder died in my R2, a race with better action, after about 3 laps . Al Carter is sending me his video from R1 which should edit in nicely and liven it up. If there are other G4R1 incar videos you would like me to cut in, let me know.

video - 14:40 - large file, hi-res encode (107 MB )
