Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

HAPPY NEW YEAR

to the Team Juicy Family, guys and gals, Hot Rodders and Cool Customers!

Road & Track just came out with their "R&T 50: A Must Do List For Every Car Enthusiast." Some were cool, many were lame (in my humble and certainly biased opinion). That got me to thinking...

The TJR group who did Bobby Ore's stunt driving school and TomBob's planned Excellent European Adventure (now that's what I call living life to the hilt) confirmed my deepest suspicions: Team Juicy could come up with an AWESOME list of automotive "things to do before you die." And why stop at 50?

I'd like to know what you would put on a list of automotive things to do "before you die," be it crazy, funny, scary, romantic, anything. It just has to be something you think is FABULOUS. I think we should get together as many ideas as possible, then we could decide if we want to vote on a top 50, 100, whatever.

To get things started, here are a few of mine:

Learn to Really Drive Your Camry: Take a Skippy 3-day school and a Car Control Clinic
Four-wheel Nordic Skiing: Team O'Neil Rally School, Dalton NH, February
Go to a Rock Show: see a Nextel Cup night race at Bristol

Whaddaya think?

This should be a cool thread to watch. Okay, Sy got #1, so I'm going to add seeing just how fast you can take Eau Rouge at Spa during some kind of track day.

Re: The Team Juicy 100

- A track walk around any historic race track at sunrise and particularly around LRP on a frosty October morning with Bob Ziegel and a bunch of racers.
- Flat through turns 1 and 2 at Tremblant in a Skippy car.
- Flat through the downhill at LRP in a Skippy car.
- Catching 4 wheel air at the uphill at LRP.
- A sunset jog around VIR on a warm May afternoon with Dr. Griest while instructors fly RC planes on the front straight.

More to come...

Re: The Team Juicy 100

Choose a new car with no regard for its practicality and pay cash without fear of arrest.

Watch the race at Monaco from the balcony of my hotel room.

Celebrate our 40th anniversary with a reprise of our surreptitious 1967 laps at St. Jovite (ok...Mont Tremblant) in a Lotus Elan on a sunny fall day.

Make Matt Sklarz smile for longer than 3.8 seconds.

A lapping day at the Glen in a Lotus 49 and a Williams 14b.

I could be here a while.

Drive through Europe with a group of my TJR friends each in their own exotic of choice..Nurburgring of course, but many other sites, towns and apexes along the way. No time deadlines, no schedule, just have as much fun as possible.

I also like the the F-1 idea of Rob's!

I'll be more specific: Pick your favorite F1 car of all time, find the vintage racer who owns it, and arrange for a private test --presumably this could be arranged if enough mollah changed hands (For me it would be either Jackie Stewart's 1971 Tyrell, or a 1973 Lotus 72).

Drive in a classic 24 hour race, such as Daytona, Le Mans, or the Nurburgring.

Watch the Indy 500 from the best seats in the house.

Drive the route of the Migle Mileia (sorry about the spelling). Preferably in a '50s vintage Ferrari.

Run a speed trap at 200+ MPH in a Lamborgini

Run the banking at Daytona --flat out, in the pouring rain!!

Do a lead-follow with JP.

Try a shifter-kart on a sprint track

Buy a beater, and enter the local demo derby

Try ice racing

See a sprint car race on a 1/2 mile dirt oval

Attend the goodwood revival meet, dressed in appropriate '50s attire.

Re: The Team Juicy 100

I wanted to list a lot of things, but the thread says "automotive" things. Okay.

Do a lap at Indy in a IndyCar, flat, with the wings set to qualifying trim.
Do a Daytona or similar 24 hour race with your best friends as co-drivers.
Teach someone to drive better.
Develop a new race car.

Fun thread!

Ten laps in any fast car, at any track (but preferably Spa), with Schumacher or (unfortunately, not possible) Senna behind the wheel.

Just for yuks, 300 m.p.h. or better at Bonneville.

A year or three in the belly of the beast with smart, fast, funny team mates and crew for the enduro grand slam of Daytona, Sebring, LeMans and the Ring. (With a chaser of bugs-in-yer teeth Baja for desert.)

Bobo got the qualifying lap at Indy.

I'd like a full 500 and since I'm thinking long, how about trying to repeat what Nick Nick did: FINISH LE MANS, SEBRING and DAYTONA all in the same year! Way to go Nick Nick - and as others noted, with friends.

Re: The Team Juicy 100

A MUST for me is the Paris-Dakar Rally.
Even that opens options. Like being part of a team of Bombardier DS650 sport quads. 2 weeks in the desert, just you, your vehicle and GPS.
Or an american style Championship Off-Road Race truck.
Or a 3 person all in one big Lorry. 4X4 huge turbodiesel.

Maybe the Bathurst 1000, try to conquer the mountain.

slightly more attainable race Championship Off-Road Race series. Baja 1000.

Re: The Team Juicy 100

Duo, the Baja for desert....?

I have always had a thing for the Unlimited Hydros, especially in the days when their nickname, Thunderboats, was a reflection of the spine-tingling sound of their huge Allison, RR Merlins, and Packard V-12's.

Nowadays it's mostly helicopter turbines, so the Thunder was left behind many years ago but the thrill is still there. Used to be as deadly as open wheel racing in the 50's - 70's (if not more so), Unlimiteds have gotten much safer with cockpit capsules and f-16 canopies, still a very high risk sport tho.

I gotta believe the adrenaline factor doesn't get a whole lot higher than running near 200 MPH on the water....
(OK, I'm a car enthusiast so this counts )

Hey, cdh-- Unlimited Hydros? Now that's some s--t! Don't know if I've got the cojones for that-- might have a stroke or something.......
At the very least my driving suit would need some DEEP cleaning.

Hey PTCruiser, I like the way you think (must be that "born-on-the same-day" thing), but how about this slight modification:
Lambo, on the Interstate, 2 a.m., 200+, no lights, night-vision goggles

And cdh, I miss those Merlins and Allisons too. Sometimes going to watch old warbirds thunder around makes it better.

A few more:

Pikes Peak hillclimb in an Unlimited
Baja 1000 in a Pro Truck
4x4 expedition with a dozen like-minded souls on the old Silk Road from Beijing to Istanbul, then Pt. Barrow, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego
and then, for real old school fun, one lap of India in an Ambassador

Re: The Team Juicy 100

Saw the commemoration of the Battle of Britain in London in 2000, the only remaining authentic Spitfire flew over Westminster, talk about chills, that Merlin was singing as the bells tolled, tears Daddy-o....

More to the point of this thread, I think running the (vintage) Mille Miglia in the same 300 SLR that Moss and Jenkins (pics #3,4) shattered the record driving in 1955 would be an ultimate adventure. Since this car is out of reach, any classic 1950's sports car (how about a Porsche 550 Spyder?) would be fantastico....

In pic #2 (car fitted with GP bodywork) those are huge inboard drum brakes ahead of the engine, this car was so revolutionary for it's day, a shame what came to pass at Le Mans that same year prompting Mercedes retirement from racing for decades. Our safety friend John Fitch was co-driver in the SLR at Le Mans btw , luck was on his side that day.

Break the land speed record at 720 something mph.
Race an ICC shifter kart in the rain, on slicks.
Ice Racing

Anything that involves insane speed or an insane low grip/high horsepower combination.

Harsha, I am with you on these. Want a co-driver?
Add to it, set the record for a Straight to Straight run. (Bering to Gibraltar)
For anyone interested, a great read is Tim Cahill's "Road Fever". It is the account of Tim's drive with endurance driver Garry Sowerby and their record setting run from Terra Del Fuego to Barrow Pt. in 23 1/2 days. Talk about a road trip.

THIS IS A GREAT THREAD
My wish would be to have my father in the right seat as we blast through the winding (devoid of traffic) roads of Vermont and New Hampshire on a mission. Every turn would be perfect, every shift would be perfectly executed, every braking point would be on the mark, and of course the speed would be extreme.
When we arrived, my dad would be duly impressed and realize that all those wasted years following racing were not really wasted.

What a great thought, George.
I guess I have just done something like that. Over Christmas break, I took my Mom out in my little turbocharged Miata with the top down, through the winding, tree-lined country roads outside Chapel Hill, NC, with the late-afternoon winter sun angling through the trees. She loves the way I take corners now that I've finally learned how to drive, you know, a single smooth input of the wheel with a settled car. I went just fast enough to give her a little rush. She had a scarf wrapped over her head, sunglasses, and felt like a movie star. When my dad wonders if I've lost my mind withall this racing stuff, I just tell him it's my mom's fault-- she used to race bikes in college in India, and I got those genes!

You got it, Rob! That would be awesome. Sometime in the next 2-3 years. Keep that schedule open.
And if you can't find that experienced WRC navigator, at least I can speak pretty good English. That's what everyone keeps telling me.

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

Harsha,
Love the image of you and your Mom riding shotgun in the Miata. Racing bikes in India? Awesome. I can see both of you smiling!

I parted ways with my beloved '92 Miata in July 05 when I bought the NSX. It had a whopping 18K on it and was prisctine. Thought I would keep it forever. I reluctantly let it go because there was no way to keep up all the cars I had in the driveway. One of my favorite times in it next to having my young daughter ride shotgun in the car seat with the top down was taking my recently departed best friend Jack for a ride at dusk, top down, in the hills of Albany County near his home. He was about 6'4" and his hairline was just over the windshield. Taking it through the gears, at high rpms, apexing every corner he looks at me and says .."What the hell are we going to do if a deer jumps out?!" My reply: 'DUCK!" We laughed about that for years.

I know this anecdote is slightly off the thread but thought we might also take a turn at saying what you want to do if you could have one more chance to add someone to one of your fantasy drives...who would it be?

George, I can relate to your image of you and your Dad as well.

OMG ! Absolutely awesome thread. I wish I could throw in some new ones, but you guys seem to have it all covered. Please think of me when you're rounding up drivers (or navigators) for
1. One Lap of America
2. Mille Miglia
3. Silk Road
4. Nurburgring
5. Miata racing anywhere
6. Any racing at Watkins Glen

I would like to race at Suzuka.
Conquer ruta quarenta on an enduro bike all the way from Equador to Tierre del Fuego.
Icekarting - with studded tires
Driving a WRC car was already mentioned i believe.

A lap on the Nurburgring in a McLaren F1.

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

I know it's a different day and age and probably not possible.

It would be completely irresponsible, politically incorrect, and at best, very dangerous.

But how much fun would it be, what with all the planning and secrecy, to salute those that did it before and run another "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash".

At the starting line in mid-town Manhattan, Gurney watches
pre-race activities as Yates mounts up.

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

It must be winter in the northeast. So cool. Dreams and memories.

Our version of the 'trophy dash' occurred two or three times in the mid seventy-somethings. It started at the George Washington Bridge plaza and finished at the BRC gate in Bridgehampton, LI. We won the second one in a VW Type III with twin Webers and a mild cam over the favored Porshe 911. Stealth was a factor but passing the Porsche as he chatted with an NYS trooper had a decided effect on the outcome.

Hey. Here's another one for the wish list. Being as dumb and carefree and irresponsibly full of the joy of living as I was then for 24 to 48 hours. Any more would probably kill me.

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

Great thread!!!

1. F1 was already mentioned, but, driving the Lotus 79 anywhere would be awesome. Mario & Divi would probably agree. IMHO the most beatiful F1 car ever!
2. Its only 3 wheels but running the luge at Mt Tremblant.
3. I've done Keith Codes Superbike school and Sy's right, definitely running a bike at the track, especially somewhere like Barber Motorsports Park in AL.
4. For Slowhand's next thread, crewing, or better still, at the helm of an America's Cup Yacht.

Can't believe none of you guys picked these:

Day of lapping at Elkhart Lake in a McLaren M-8F.

Day of lapping at IMS in a 1950's Kurtis or Watson roadster.

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

It may not be automotive, but here in the Great Northeast, we all probably picked up the FLEXABLE FLYER and ran and jumped on it and went downhill head first. This may have been the first time we got the rush of speed while only inches from the ground.
My wife made the racing suits for the U.S. skeleton team. Got to ride down, just like the FLYER only IIIIINNNNNNNSSSSSAAAAANNNNEEEEE !!!!!
Also had the thrill of Bobsled run at Mt Vanhovenburg. Didn't see much though, Just put my head between my legs and kissed my ass goodbye!!! They wouldn't let me drive!!! This is kind of like the lead dog on a dogsled; he get to see a change of scenery and all the other dogs get a view of the same thing
ooops got off track

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

What a great thread, I am afraid if i start it will never end. Off road racing, rallies, endurance, power boats.... I bet i watched the Gumball rally a thousand times as a kid. 66 427 Cobra, sea to shining sea, that would be my number 1! Maybe we need a top 100 list of favorite/ fantasy race cars? Lapping day in an M8D would be fantastic, but so would a D type Jag or a 935 K4, so many race cars so few dollars. But who am I kidding, getting in a race car at my 3day was a dream come true!

When we arrived, my dad would be duly impressed and realize that all those wasted years following racing were not really wasted.
Dads - some of them - understood.

Wish I knew how to paste the picture of our '56 Austin Healy 100 on the Continental Divide Rally that year - we drove non stop there and back from Indy and finished 3rd - before we put the 283 ci Chevy V-8 in '58. Ran the rally again and sure had fun passing the "faster" cars.

Harsha, I am with you on these. Want a co-driver?Add to it, set the record for a Straight to Straight run. (Bering to Gibraltar)
Hey, Rob: Speaking of sponsorship, first idea: do you think we could get Spyker to "lend" us a Peking-to-Paris for the Strait-to-Strait?
http://news.caradisiac.com/Salon-de-...eking-to-Paris
(Not really roughing it but with that horsepower, we would definitely set a record! And we would more than balance out the extravagance with the Ambassador later--trust me)

We could be a tribute to the original Peking-to-Paris Rally in 1907 that put Spyker on the map.
http://www.ritzsite.net/Spyker/03_spyker.htm

I think we could sell it. They want publicity and seem to have gazillions to throw at it (here's a riddle: how many digits in "F1"?). And being Dutch, they would probably love your shoes (you, know, from that other thread )

Re: Team Juicy's Top 100 Things To Do Before You Die

Harsha,
Great idea, if only my french was better I could understand the article better. From what I can gather it looks like that new Spyker is based on the Tourag/Cayenne. That would be a suitable ride for a long trip over who knows what kind of roads. Especially with the VW TDI v10 set up to burn biodiesel.
I get right on it.

Rob

After reading all of the great reports and comments by those in attendance, I can't help but think that participating in a 24 Hours of Daytona has to be on the list somewhere. I am envious, but in a good way. What a blast that must have been.

Definitely has to be on the list. After what I saw and especially Michele's heartfelt account of the atmosphere, the ambiance, the camaraderie, the sheer nirvana of it all, I am envious in every sort of way. I'll definitely be there next year to be a part and cheer the Juicy Lemons on, and I can only hope that one day I'll be skilled enough to get some of that awesome early morning seat time. Watching the long light of dawn creep into that stadium from the left seat of a Cup car with the throttle matted-- some of us know how that feels now....

that smile would stay on my face for a long time...

Having never yet done so myself, I will settle for actually rather than virtually driving a race car

You all must be some of the greatest minds I know...what a list. I didn't see these three

1. Complete the entire Dakar Rally in the motorcycle catagory.
2. Lapping at The Glen in a 1973 Tryall 006
3. Make love to 3 women the night before starting and ultimately completing the Dakar Rally in the motorcycle catagory.

Thanky, JROD,

My wife was beginning to understand some of this before you brought up the three women thing.

I am laughing so hard my sides hurt, I can't get up off the floor, and my tears have created a damp spot on the carpet.....oh my God.....come back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Hunt, Jimmy Hunt!

oldredracer, you've impressed me before, but if your wife is only just now freaking out, I bow down to you, Great Master of Smoke and Mirrors. I am coming to you for advice when I get hitched.

and JROD: thanks for putting into words what many of us can't (damn that p.c. filter on my DSL line)
