saw this in another forum, don't think it was one of our illustrious instructors, sounds like it has its origin in NASTYCAR
Understeer is hitting the wall with the front of the car, oversteer is hitting the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you push wall.
I don't know about the second part, but the first part is usually attributed to Fireball Roberts. Back when Nascar was, you know, actually fun to watch. Don't get me started.

Actually my signature is from Jock Clear. He was a senior race engineer at BAR Honda a few years back.

Re: My collection of racing quotes....
I miss you guys
As far as the Brucisms go I have a correction...
"Paranoia is a HEIGHTENED state of awareness"
and an addition here are some I heard peronally
"you'll go places people haven't walked"
"you know you're going to crash right?"
"you skill is writing checks your experience can't cash"
not the only ones I gave him a chance to use lol
Two quotes that stick in my mind from my track time at skip
A quote from Stephan:
"and I can't believe I am saying this but..." he went on to tell me there was more speed available in west bend
A quote from Murph:
"Black flag the 66 car... if he makes it there" on the radio to the flagstand after I turned in late for the downhill and went for a ride in my first ever lapping session in the RT
too many too post... thanks for all the memories guys!!!
I was lucky enough to attend the Laguna Seca Rolex Cup race as a guest of Dr. Lowe and JP. More thankful I could not be. There was a conversation going on between Dr. Lowe and Kelly Collins during the autograph session. Kelly was asking Dr. Lowe where he qualified. After Dr. Lowe told him both were glad they had qualified in front a particular driver. Kelly's ending quote according to JP who was there, was "well at least we are in front of him, being behind that guy is like being a potted plant".

Re: My collection of racing quotes....
Late to this party where many party favors have been shared.
Jochin Rindt advised a young Pete Argetsinger: "You can drive just as fast in the wet as in the dry - as long as your hands are straight."
Appropropriate for all racing, but I first heard it in 1957 from Jimmy Bryan after he'd slow rolled the Dean Van Lines Special against the outside rail in 4th turn soft dirt at Duquoin; "At least I kept it between the fences." After the car was righted and pushed to the pits, they refired it and he drove a few more laps.
One of my favorites was heard from across track at West Palm Gran Prix, an unamed Racer (later Skippy Instructor) was explaining to another Racer (who had moments before caused a big crash with the unnamed Racer) that Racer's driving ability.
"You idiot, you couldn't drive a nail into grease"
I have to write this one for the younger crowd... I asked a very cool and nice 40 year old guy in a 3 day at Road Atlanta if he could remember to threshold brake, downshift, and actually turn in on time. He came back over the radio from the stop box with " negative ghost rider, the brain is full".... and he drove away sheepishly...
