The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
To TJR members:
We were surprised to hear that Dom Bastien had bypass surgery last week but can thankfully report he is doing extremely well. He sends his regards and gave me permission to spread the word.
By E-mail Dom says:
"Yes, I had by-pass surgery last monday night; out of the hospital in 3 days; back at work Friday; up to 30 minutes at 5mph on the treadmill; lost 10 lbs. I feel grateful: miraculous modern surgery, fantastic nurses, devoted and caring wife. The experience hopefully will give me a new dimension on the race track--calm."
As usual, Dom is "strong like bull", funny, quick and to the point. :-)
By his own description, it sounds like he went to a health spa for a tune up. However, while bypass is done many times every day all over the country and we tend to think of it as a gimee, it is still very much major surgery and then some. Dom's quick initial recovery is quite remarkable, as is his spirit. I know he's been logging on to TJR so lets give him some "Juice" for a speedy recovery.
...Be afraid my friends, be very afraid... A newly "calm" Dom with improved blood flow and 10 fewer pounds in an RT will be awfully hard to keep off the podium... But we'll all look forward to trying! :-)
Get well, and come back soon Dom!

Re: The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
Dom, I wish you all the best. With the increased blood and thus oxygen supply red mist will now be a thing of the past I assume.
30 Minutes @ 5mph?? That is simply amazing.

Re: The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
Wow! I am happy everything went so smoothly and that you are recovering so well. Also very happy that something prompted you to get checked out so this could be discovered and corrected before it became something worse. Get well soon Dom. See you soon.

Re: The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
Thanks for your good wishes and for the amusing [dare I say, very “juicy”] comments.
I have a couple of things to say.
To my fellow masters, assuming you are not a grade A hypochondriac, if you get symptoms [such as shortness of breath], don’t be bashful, see your doctor. You are your best diagnostician. That’s what I did in 1998 [I escaped with a stent] and again now. The cure beats the alternative especially with this procedure which is both a miracle and a blessing.
Now, of course, the only relevant question is: when can I get back in a Skippy car? My cardiologist will be the final arbiter. But I am putting my money on Mt Tremblant. The only limiting factor that I can see are the damned skippy seat belts pushing on my cut-up rib cage. Why can’t SBRS have softer seat belts? Or maybe belts with small inflatable cushions to spread the pressure? Or maybe… Hmm, excuse me, I need to go and polish off an open letter to Aaron Hollander.

@AJ, Steven and Randy,
Just looking at the ESBR standings I would like to suggest you check your food when MJ is around. He's a man on a mission. Don't ever get caught between an Amok and a champioship trophy.
Did you see he even admitted his Syrup assault on Dom - cold blooded?!

Dom:
You're an amazing person. Hope you get back to 100% quickly. So far I'm one for one on symptoms, is there anything else I should be looking for? If you're at the track next week look for us, I'll be either racing or flagging.

Monsieur Bastien:
You are an amazing competitor and you spirit is always on high, You have all of our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Don't push the healing time on "Les Ribs" however.
Hope to see you on track as soon as you are able to, preferably in the rear of the pack so for once you can be on my tailpipe!

A rematch it is, then. Shall we make arrangements at LRP? I'll only be spectating there too. Till then, take care of yourself and heal up.

Re: The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
Dom,
Positively impressed with your spirits... you make it sound like you went in for a waxing job. AND you are planning to get into a race car within a month... you are 'strong like bull'.
Glad you caught it on time buddy and if you make it to 7 miles an hour for 30 minutes you will be in better shape than 75% of the team juicy members (including me of course).
Be well and enjoy the lighter and healthier MR. Bastien.

Re: The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
Dom, Best wishes for a safe recovery. Unlike racing, bypass surgery recovery is usually better with a "slow in, gradual return to throttle" approach. Take it easy for at least a little, OK?
By the way, did your surgeon remind you that you can resume having sex, as long as it's with your wife?

Re: The "Dom"-inator has bypass surgery
Dom,
Sorry I've been away from emails so slow to respond to news of your surgery. Glad you're recovery is proceding smoothly. Jim Lowe is right about giving yourself time to recover well, though your early prowess on the treadmill predicts an early return to racing which we all look forward to.
