Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fund - Nations Cup Race of Champions
This 'pick the winners' of the Race of Champions Nation's Cup competition is for the benefit of the mechanics fund, a trully worthy cause. The event, which looks like it's going to be AWESOME, is a multi-discipline racing event set in Paris on Saturday December 4th. It airs twice on HDNet on Saturday, in high definition.
Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Loeb, Jeff Gordon and Marcus Gronholm, with 12 other awesome drivers, will represent themselves in an Individual Competition, and their country in the Team Competition, driving Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge cars, ROC Cars and Citroen Xsara WRC & Peugeot 307 WRC rally cars.
2. The winner gets 50% of the pot. The Mechanics Fund gets the remainder after PayPal fees are deducted. I will then take the money and give it to Sid, who will deduct his usual fees and expenses
3. Picks: You get to choose two drivers for the Individual Competition, and two teams for the Team Competition. The drivers you choose may not be team mates, nor may they be on any of the teams you have chosen for the team competition. Your picks are due Saturday, December 4th, 10am Eastern Time. You may edit your picks up till then. If your entry is late, or if you edit your pick after that, you will have made a wonderful no-chance-to-win contribution to the mechanics fund.
4. Scoring: You will be awarded points based on standard F1 scoring for each of your picks in their respective competitions.
Example -
Your Picks:
(Individual) Michael Schumacher, Sebastien Bourdais
(Team) Sweden, USA
Results for your picks:
Individual Competition
Michael Schumacher - 2nd Place = 8 Points
Sebastien Bourdais - 9th Place = 0 Points
Team Competition
Team Sweden - 4th Place = 5 Points

Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
I have good news, and I have bad news.
The good news is that prior to Matt's entry, we had already raised $250 in entry fees, but with Matt covering every permutation, roughly 16x15x8x7 = 13,440 possible entries (please help me out if you are a statistics expert), @ $50 a pop equals $672,000, plus the $250 from me, Martin and Francois. Not bad! Thanks Matt!
The bad news is that:
1) You guys don't read the rules, ever, do you? Francois, you can't choose a team that has a driver that you also picked for the indvidual competition, and vice versa. As an example, you can't pick Sebastien Loeb andTeam France
2) It's true that I need help
3) I'm not so sure Matt's really serious about picking up $672K in entries. How about picking just one or two entries? It's for the Mechanics Fund, so you'll win even if you lose.
Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
Rules, who reads the rules.. this is a skippy event right. I think I will need to defer my bet of $672K till I read these rules.WOW for $672K I had better have a car in the top of the window.

Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
I cannot be French and smart! That's a lot to bear for a single(!) man...
Soooo... Let me try again...
ze french chauffeur will win but ze french team will not... zat makes a lot of sense...
Pick1:
Sebastien Loeb
Marcus Gronholm
Team PlayStation
Germany
Pick2:
Sebastien Bourdais
Felipe Massa
France
Finland
Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
I'm in, since its for Sid...I mean the mechanics:
Colin McRae (knows the Xsara) and Sebastian Loeb (knows the Xsara and has home field advantage)
Finland (Gronholm knows the 307 and Heikki Kovalainen HAS to be a rally driver)
Germany (I don't know who this "Michael Schumacher" chap is, but Armin Schwartz is another good rally driver)
If I win, maybe I can afford to go on the next Juicy Karting Expedition.
Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
Francois, I am glad that you share my pain. But I assume you know the background of Sy's rules?!
He knows that you and I would want to go for our boys, just because - being surrounded by all these Americans - it is hard enough anyway to be a good patriot (can I as a German say that at all in a public forum??).
But since his SEC translates into aNRH* for Iran - at least for the last 5,000 years or so - he wants to have us suffer, too.
As for the math: Sy, remind me never to do any business with you.
I am no expert, but I understand that there are 64 driver combos, right?
OK (remember I am daddy's son), out of those 64 driver combos, 8 are 'uninational' and can be combined with the 7 other teams.
56 are 'multinational' and can be combined with the 6 remaining teams.
So it is 7 times 8 plus 6 times 56 equals 7 times 56 equals 392 combos. At a wager of 50$ a pop, Matt can easily shell out the $19,600, it is about half his average annual crash liability (my trash contribution).
Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
I am brain-dead today, no comments, and somewhat frightened that if I get the selection format wrong I will be chastised by Sy. Hell, it is not worth it, take my $100 (already paid to PayPal) and give it to the mechanics fund!
Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fun - Nations Cup Race of Champions
PLEASE NOTE - The entry deadline has been extended to 10am Saturday Morning, half an hour before Race Start.
And Matt - don't forget to put in your picks, or at least tell us how much you're contributing. Sid called and wants to know if we'll raised enough for him to buy a new pair of earrings for wife #6.

Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fund - Nations Cup Race of Champions
I am tired but I cannot let go this permutation thing. My new offer is 2800 combinations with a maximum wager of $140,000. C'mon guys - anyone out there who can best my guess. MJ, Pork Chop, DD aren't you all math wiz kids...
I guess he'll need a replacement - U.S. ROC team representatives should click on "Send a private message to tomahawk". I have my helmet, HANS and shoes in the car and will drive straight to the airport...

You may be kidding, but I'm not when I tell you that two days ago I sent Michelle Mouton (she runs the ROC) an entry submission for Team Juicy and two of our drivers next year! As we are all completely qualified to go up against those guys, I fully expect that I will get the call any minute now to field the entry to replace Jeff Gordon. So guys, I'll call you when I return as .

I hate to be the one to point out the flaws in Martin's attempts to reduce the odds of winning here to statistics, but since you asked...
Martin... you don't need a mathematician, you need an oddsmaker. To simply calculate the number of potential combinations (by the way, it's combinations not permutations) of outcomes assumes randomness. That doesn't exist here. It would be like saying that Michael Schumacher and Zsolt Baumgartner both had a one in 20 shot at winning the driver's championship last year. I doubt these teams are all equally qualified to win. As MacDod would point out... they don't all weigh the same!
Also, the results are not independant, because due to the rules- choosing any driver eliminates your ability to pick one other driver and a team. Picking your 2nd driver eliminates another team. Granted, that doesn't affect your ability to pick the winner for this competition... as everyone is under the same constraints.
If you were to randomize the outcome... Sy's math was closer than Martin's.... 16x15x8x7... but perhaps even he is confused by his own rules!
Your first pick is indeed 1 of 16. But, your second pick would only offer 14 choices (can't pick the same driver or his teammate). That leaves 6 team picks and 5 team picks in the next 2 rounds.
Total combinations? 6720. Total cost to assure a win (or at least a tie) $336,000.
Want to try a proof? Pick the other way round... 8 teams times 7 teams times 12 drivers times 10 drivers = 6720.
Hmmm.... Martin, perhaps you deserve a blue flag in the Sportsman's math group?

Just in case anyone picked Jeffy...
"Flu Knocks Jeff Gordon Out of Race of Champions
Written by: Cassio Cortes
Paris, France – 12/3/2004 Gordon will no longer get the chance to go head-to-head with Michael Schumacher
Four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon has withdrawn from this weekend's Race of Champions, the season-ending all-star event scheduled for Paris’ Stade de France.
A severe case of the flu has forced Gordon to spend Wednesday night in a hospital, prompting him to cancel his trip to France as well as to NASCAR's parade through the streets of New York yesterday.
Caught by surprise, the event’s organizers promised to Gordon’s replacement at Team USA, whose other half consists of NASCAR regular Jimmie Johnson, later today.
Despite the black-eye from Gordon’s absence, 54,000 tickets have already been sold for this years ROC, leaving just 6,000 further seats available."

I am not ashamed of receiving the blue flag here. My ability of understanding Sy's rules is similar to your passing skills.
My math skills are only slightly better. But see, like being lapped in LR by - just to pick a name - Marco, this usually occurs to me, chronologically after it occured to you. Similar here.
While I was not too shy to put myself and my limited skills out there, you had good three days in your hideout to learn from my flaws and come up with a better approach.
But here is good news for you: your team combos are right: there are 30.
Considering the drivers I would say you had a 4off and should report to the pits.
Since you have to pick pairs, driver 1 - regardless of height and weight - has only 14 choices. Same for driver 2.
Driver 3 has 12 choices etc. Makes 112. So the overall combinations available sum up to 3360. The odds of any two to win are small, but I think I got around 45% covered with mine - I did pick Michael (Schumacher).

Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fund - Nations Cup Race of Champions
You guys and your damn stats, permutations and combinations.
Who cares?
Throw a little bit of moneu to the mechanics instead of sitting there with your thumb up your a**...
You guys remind me of this TV ad for the Bank of Scotland where the poor guy is choking to death at a table in a restaurant and his friends are describing how to do the Heimlinch(?) maneuver, meanwhile a guy from another table just comes , does it and save the f****** day!!!
In the spirit of Xmas, Hannukah or whatever you believe in, just participate and give...
MJ, I am throwing a bottle of Patron if you win this competition, that should give you enough of an incentive... (You will just have to drink it with me obviously...)

[what the hell am i thinking i get it all anyhow]
Sid, you have a lot of experience. Can you tell me if there could be a correlation between my recent nuptials, and my brain getting soft? Well I guess if the answer was "YES" I would have to ask someone else.

Casey Mears Stands In for Jeff Gordon at Race of Champions
Written by: Andrew CraskParis, France – 12/3/2004
The American team for this weekend’s Race of Champions all-star event at the Stade de France in Paris was thrown into disarray late Thursday with the news that NASCAR star Jeff Gordon would be unable to compete, but the team has now settled on Casey Mears as a replacement for the Hendrick Motorsports star.
Four-time NASCAR champion Gordon withdrew from the event after coming down with a severe case of flu, which necessitated an overnight stay in hospital on Wednesday. Mears, 26, competed in the ROC for Team USA last year alongside Boris Said and Travis Pastrana. The son of off-road star Roger Mears and nephew of Hall of Fame Indy car star Rick Mears joins fellow NASCAR Nextel Cup racer Jimmie Johnson on this year’s American squad.
Meanwhile, some of the drivers previously scheduled to compete Saturday for this year’s star-studded Race of Champions had their first opportunity on Friday to test the spectacular figure-of-eight circuit specially laid out for the event at the Stade de France, Paris (Michael Schumacher and the Team USA pair arrive on Saturday morning). They found the 1km all-asphalt track extremely challenging, and the prospect of competing in the 62,000-capacity stadium uniquely stimulating.
The Race of Champions course will match up some of the world's best drivers on this figure-8 stadium course.
“I think it’s going to be a terrific show,” enthused 2004 World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb. “It’s a great idea to put a track here, in the Stade de France, here in the center of Paris. The track itself is quite narrow and the cars will slide, which is nice for the spectators.
“I spent my runs this afternoon getting accustomed to the different cars we will be driving on Saturday. I obviously know the Citroën Xsara WRC, but the controls of the Peugeot 307 WRC are a bit different and the Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge and the ROC cars are very different altogether. It would be nice to win; I will do my best to win, but the important thing is the show.”
Scottish rally ace Colin McRae added, “It’s going to be great fun. The track is challenging and it will be important to have a good feeling with the different cars. If it stays dry it shouldn’t be too slippery. It’s the first time I’ve ever set foot in the Stade de France. Today the grandstands were empty, but in a front of a packed house tomorrow the atmosphere promises to be really great.”

Re: Competition to Benefit the Mechanic's Fund - Nations Cup Race of Champions
ok, math time again. Kudos to MB and SA for spanking me and proving it. Well at least halfway anyway. You are right... I was doing permutations, when combinations were called for. But, similarly, you are now doing permutations for the second team pick. I'll let Sy devise the proof!
As for Francois' challenge... my plan was the same as Phobos. Send a check without embarrasing myself with picks. (Remember, I was the only one to do worse than Pork Chop in the F1 pool!)
But, as Patron is too good to pass up (in the words of The Man in Black) "very well, I accept". I do propose a twist however. A bottle of patron as a side bet among the two of us. Higher score wins. I also propose... if you win, we drink in my theater... if I win, we drink in your Elise!
