Re: VIR!!

I'll be there with my wife Susan and my son Gavin. My son is now 19 months and was only 6 mo old when I attended my first race last year. I can't wait to get back to VIR, the site of my first Skippy race in the R/T car last year. This year I'll be in the MX-5 car (which I'm much more comfortable in...both physically and mentally). I loved running the formula car last year but the sports car scene seems much more open. The MX-5 cars are a blast and you can't beat Skippy in terms of value for the money and terrific instruction. Hopefully, I'll get to see all of you in the large metropolis of Alton soon!?!

Thumbs up Re: VIR!!

Will miss VIR this year with "miss" being the operative word. A great road course in an absolutely beautiful setting. So much fun last spring in the Skippy cars and last fall in a Miata at the 13 hr. Charge of the Headlight Brigade.

Enjoy The Lodge if you're lucky enough to get in, and don't forget the karting track. (Drive through "The Lodge" parking lot) VIR is also home to large anti-terrorist and law enforcement training center so gaggles of Crown Vic's chasing beater cars around their training area is sometimes an interesting side show. One year we were also witness to a drifting workshop in the inner loop.

Their restaurant, set in the old farm house, will serve you a good drink and even better meal.

Some say I'm not going to VIR to avoid Jim Craige as a master... Balderdash... Poppycock... Horsefeathers! I'm not going so I can practice for my karting league night at GPNY!

However to the rest of you who will have to face Mr. Craige alone... Be afraid... be very, very afraid.

Pat, you will be missed... The place won't be the same without you! I promise I will try to uphold our Eastern Series reputation for aggressiveness well beyond our talent level.

Often wrong but never in doubt!!!!

That would be the uncivil union for sure. Candles, hot tub, barnyard animals... All on Sid's Yacht. It would be the YouTube kinky beastiality version of Noah's Ark... Where's Doug when we really need him?

It only took 2 posts to hijack this thread and turn it into a theme of beastiality and porn.

Who says we still don't have it! The new guys have nothing on us!

I am in with my Brother (first race for him). Bringing "Petey" and his little cousin "Tomas" along too. I am trying to talk Quentin Wahl in and feel pretty strongly he is coming.

Should be a fun weekend and the old format is back so that will be real fun...

See you soon

You guys really aren't making it easy for us newbies... Since they did away with the different groups, we're looking to get spanked by you vets... I guess that just means we'll have to resort to off-track means of persuasion.

Re: VIR!!

If taking your licking with your eyes open on the track doesn't teach you enough get Dick Lippert and Quentin to show you the fast way around the kart track too. You'll be surprised how much you'll learn on both venues.

How to beat those guys:
Ludwig - tell him he is the best
Lippert - tell him he must win or he has lost
Quentin - never mind, he is no threat anyway

I am now afraid....really afraid. I was hoping for a nice weekend without any bitching.......and now?
Sid, I will look forward to a van around with you....My insurance is fully paid up. It is more dangerous riding with you than driving my novice self.

I am envious of everyone who is going to VIR. It's a great track! Unfortunately I'll be sitting out this Skippy season, as the latest price increase has made it so that I can no longer afford the race weekends. So for now I am looking for some really good outdoor kart tracks near NYC.

Yes. It's the same at LRP for all schools. The only drink available in the pit lane (or up at the driving school exercises) coolers is the 16fl. oz. water.

Ok, so perhaps it is a bit stingy not to have sodas, but shouldn't we all be drinking water and re-hydrating anyway? #1 rule I was taught about sports nutrition when I was rowing: Thou shalt not drink sodas. Maybe they're just looking out for our health...

You're right: it is healthier to drink water. However, if you're really dehydrated, it's better to drink something like Gatorade -- especially the new, lower-calorie G2 -- because water doesn't add any electrolytes to your system and actually waters down what's already in your blood stream. So a little sugar, potassium, sodium, etc. is good. Personally, I bring 1.5L with me whenever I go anywhere and try to drink at least 2L per day -- never drink soda. But I'm sure the instructors and mechanics would probably appreciate the caffiene.

Hey Russel,
How about the air-conditioned comfort of an indoor kart track near NYC? Wonder where you'd find one of those?

After muchwith my secretary, family, and those who say" you ought to know better at your age", many hours dreaming that
I am in fact the reincarnation of Graham Hill (now doesnt that just show my age for sure), doing this until i've lost all sense,
sulking for a week over a decision, on my knees to the gods of E-Z credit ,. and finially, finally as the good true Irshman that I am , turned to the only reliable counsel left in life: and have made the decision to attend. I hope everyone has a safe trip down. Please remember that 80+mph will get you a reckless driving, misdomeanor, ticket in the Commonwealth of Virginia, on any highway. In addition, 20mph over on roads where speed limit is 55 or less is also reckless. Bad news, so watch your speed coming and going; we have way too many cops. See you there .

Would love to hear your experience of what it's like getting back on the horse after a 4 year layoff.
Have you been doing other forms of racing or out of racing completely?

Good luck!

Re: VIR!!

OK... We need some on site reporters here.

I hear Gerardo won the memorial beating Matt Franc by a whisker (Sadly Matt had to be put to sleep after the race ) This was the maiden voyage for the return of the single class system (No more Champ and Sportsman group) as well as the return of a gaggle of racers old enough to remember when that was the only system. There was a big field of MX-5's and a healthy dose of crashing in both open wheel and MX-5's.

So spill the beans... If you were there... How was it?

Re: VIR!!

I was there and it was... Interesting. Ok, and a hell of a lot of fun too! I can't provide too much commentary on the other race groups since I was spending most of my time just trying to keep my head above water during my first race weekend, but I can at least give a beginner's impression.

Practice: First time out on track had the distinct thought, "What the heck were they thinking when they designed this track?" Got progressively more and more comfortable despite having a few spins in various (non-damaging) places. The vets and karter kids had definitely come out to play and we immediately started seeing times in the 2:10-2:14 range.

Qualifying: Decided that I should really see what I could do if I just put aside all thoughts of self-preservation. Managed to put up a flyer of 2:17, which was 6 seconds quicker than my practice time of 2:23. More importantly, I was consistently running in the 2:18s so I felt pretty solid about that. A number of people spun off, including a couple of the vets and one of the Brazilian kart kids. Ultimately the attrition put me up to 6th on the grid. This was the high point of the weekend.

Race 1: Felt fine right up to the start, but then the red mist settled in big time. In the first two laps I had managed to go four off in oak tree, as well as having a nice spin (but not four off) under braking into 14 at the end of the straight. Made my stop and pulled my head back together and got back into the rhythm on my outlap and felt really good heading into lap four as I was steadily pulling away from the guy I came out of the pits in front of. I finally got oak tree somewhat close to right on that lap and got a good launch down the back straight and pushed my braking point back to the .75 board (I know, I know go ahead and call me a pansy ) when all hell broke loose. One moment I'm blipping to snag second right before turn in, the next my head is being bounced around the cockpit like a pinball and the world is spinning around me. Turns out the guy behind me had gotten "optimistic" with his braking and ran smack dab into my gearbox hard enough that the damage to the cars had the mechanics thinking he had hit me while I was stopped. I was pretty dizzy so they made me get checked out by the med center but after a few hours they cleared me to race the next day.

Race 2: Started 14th out of 15 and managed to get up to 12th before getting to the 6, 7, 8, and 9 complex. Just as I'm turning in to 7, a couple cars make contact and one of them spins to a stop at the apex in front of me. I felt like I had two choices: either take a chance on hitting him and making a serious accident even worse by trying to squeeze by, or drop some speed and drive straight off and around him. I chose the latter. From there it was a fairly uneventful race, ending up with me in 10th thanks to some further shennanigans up the field from me.

All in all, not a bad weekend. I pretty stoked that I could drop a consistent 4 seconds off my best practice time after only one day of practice, especially now that I have a better feeling for where my weak points are, but I was disappointed that I didn't get to run a single clean race (due to no fault of my own in the second race). I will say, though, that the really quick guys could have been a bit more cognizant of the fact that some of us are still learning; I was ready to pack it up and go home after having near crashes in the esses and the downhill section from 14-17 during practice caused by people dive bombing from way back or forcing me off-line. For this combined group thing to work, the really quick guys have to realize that they can't treat everyone on track during practice the same way they would during a race for points. Its legal and there's nothing technically wrong with it, but it makes the people who are just trying to learn really bitter at the lack of consideration shown by the veterans. I'll definitely be back, but I'd love to hear some stories from guys further up the field.

Re: VIR!!

Incredible weather and great fun at VIR! I can't speak to the R/T cars but to say that I think there might have been a record number of spins on the first race day...in the dry. Also a great turnout for the opening weekend for the East and Midwest groups in the R/T cars.

The MX-5 group was great. Terrific racing with minimal contact...(with the exception of the leaders on the last lap of the last race) and great weather made for an excellent second Mazdaspeed Challenge weekend.
Skippy even had a barbeque on Friday with free (yes, free) food and free beer (yes, even beer...at least I hope it was free 'cause I didn't pay).
It was great to see old friends, and make new ones. If you haven't tried the MX-5 cars, do a practice session in one, I promise, it'll leave a big grin on your face. Drifting the car through Oak Tree with the car seemingly pointing at the tree was fun (OK, not very fast, but wicked fun)
I personally had a great time, finished P2 in the first race and even got a little sunburn in the Virginia sun.
The memorial was great. I watched from the bottom of the esses watching from turn 5 through 10 and the way those guys handled the cars (Bobo and Hazmat talking through their radios as they went) was just incredible Top 5 (Bobo, Hazmat, Lugnuts, Corey Lewis and Doppler Dave) finishing within 1.33 sec of each other. A true showing of skill in the R/T cars. Despite being doused in ice water PRIOR to the race, Bobo still came away victorious. Glad I stayed to observe the memorial.
I think a great time at VIR was had by all.

P.S. My only regret is this...riding back from VIR to Raleigh/Durham my wife says "I talked to Dick (Lippert) today as he was leaving and he told me about the "matching funds program for wives of Skippy drivers." I played dumb...it didn't work. Thanks Dick, time for a home equity loan... See you all next time, Scott

Re: VIR!!

Thanks for those reports (congrats Scott and others), sorry I couldn't be at that amazing circuit with you all, love that weekend. Saw this pic on GA site, kinda says a lot about VIR

BTW, what is opinion of one group racing now that weekend completed? Maybe should post in the original thread about the changes....

Re: VIR!!

The weather at vir was terrific, and it was great to see a few of the guys I had raced with there over the past two years. BUT, the new format stunk. The response I got from those who had driven in Sportsman was negative. Whats the attraction if the first five drivers are so much quicker, more expierenced, professional/semi-professional, to the middle runners? Before someone who
raced mid-pack, could at least see themselves up front with some luck. I didnt find any one I knew, who drove sportman in the past that liked the single championship format.

Re: VIR!!

I advocate a new format: single competitor races. We each race by ourselves, alone on the track, one at a time. That way we can all win races! Yay!

The real question is --- would crash damage go up or down?

Re: VIR!!

After reading this thread, and other like it in the past it seems to me that the biggest reason people give as to why the single group format is better is that you shouldn't come in and win a race right away, but rather have to spend time getting fast enough to compete with the best in the series and then win a race based on being the best, and not because you are in an easier group.

However, if I am correct in the above statement, then it also seems to me that this statement is made most often by people in the championship group. Interestingly these are the people who will benefit the most from a single group because they will have fewer competitors to beat in order to win a race. If you have a mix of speed in your race group it's easier to win if you are in the top group than if everyone in your group is very fast.

I have race in both formats, and much prefer having two groups based on speed. When running in the sportsman is can usually manage top 4. I have yet to win, but have come quite close. When I ran in the single group format I was mid pack and had no one to run with. It was pretty boring. I'd love to be able to become fast enough to run with the top guys, but I don't have enough money to participate often enough to become so. So for someone like me, who races once or twice a year (or in the case of this year not at all because I can't afford it right now) the two group format is better because it's more fun. I can have a great weekend and race against a group of people who all have my level of experience. In my opinion part of what you are buying from skip barber is the fantasty of being a race car driver. That is more fun if you can possibly get a podium. Would I like to be good enough to win the race against everyone? Yes of course, but the truth is there are people who have tons of money and race every weekend, and do double practice sessions, so not surprisingly are much faster. Therefore for the fun factor the two group format is better in my opinion.

Sadly, in my case, it would go up.

Yeah, right Revere. Your dad's would definitely go down because there wouldn't be anybody to punt him off! I do hope that trend doesn't continue!

Re: VIR!!

Ditto on rf360m's post with one addition. If you win in sportsman, even once, you move up to Championship immediately.
