Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
I see that our oft-maligned partner TJR has already re-named the old Formula Dodge R/T 2000 the 'MazdaSpeed 2000'. While this is the leading candidate for the name, it is still unconfirmed (as is the whole Mazda deal) and as such, is still subject to change.
So please submit your name suggestions here. Thanks, and Zoom Zoom! |
Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
Mazda Formula 10. As previously noted, 10 is the Atomic number of Neon (NE), so for as long as the R/T's continue with Neon motors, it may be applicable.

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
MazdaSpeed 2000 sounds sweet & simple to me but if pressed for my second choice I'd have to go with...
Super Zoomer 2000 Skip Barber Race Series /Aaron /George /Todd /Ford /MazdaSpeed /Rotary /GT40 /Hertz /Cobrajet /RX8,6,5,3 /Goody's Headache Powder Special. It has a nice flow to it and with an abbreviated SZ2000SBRSAGTFMSRGT40HCRX8653GHPS decal on the racecars you can't miss. :D Kidding aside: I do like MazdaSpeed followed by the number of cubic centimeters of the engine. Keep it simple. My 2 cents. :-) |
Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
Better hope it ain't Toyota, if only because of the speed division's name. For example: "Like a moving chicane, the TRD blocked my path".
|
Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
This is the third remake/new car for Skip Barber, correct? What about the Formula Dodge 3.0 (oops can't use that)....... the Formula 3.0 SB
Just a simple idea. Maby it'ld sound better if you rearrange the words. SBF 3.0 SBV3 Barber Formula 3.0 3.0 Farber Zoomy Barber Formula V3 Actually, I like SBV3 |
Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
well, to date there are a few cars already adorned with the MAZDA decals. 'Sponsored by' for now, 'Powered by' at a later date. To be honest, although I have not asked, I do not know what the 'R/T' in 'R/T2000 represents. For what it's worth I would have to go from R/T2000 to M/S2000 And that of course would be even more applicable if I were to get my wish of rotary power. 'Mazda Speed' baby!

Formula Dodge becomes Formula Mazda? Nope. Got that already.
Mazda is using MPS here and isn't so far using Mazdaspeed. Hence: Formula MPS Barber MPS Barber MPS + #of rotors?/cc.?/ci.? Barber MX + #of rotors?/cc.?/ci.? Mazda SB1 Mazda SBR (regional car) Mazda SBN (national car) Mazda SBG (geriatric car) Oh c'mon. just kidding. |

With no disrespect oldred... Mazda is now using MazdaSpeed designations for their MX6, Miata and MX3 performance models so not sure what you mean when you say they are using MPS here and not MazdaSpeed? What is MPS? Here's a link MazdaSpeed MX3 page Quote:

To get back to the name, a simplistic aproach may work best. Instead of trying to sound flashy [:rotflmao: Pinto:rotflmao: ] I may be out of the loop on the chassis of the new car as well, but I'm sure that could be tied into the name as well. Just my 2 cents. |
Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
The Neon engines currently in the R/T's have 2 liters of displacement and the "2000" designation refers to the same 2 liters in cubic centimeters or cc's. Either designation can be used depending on the preference of the car or engine manufacturer, but it means the same thing. BTW One liter or 1,000cc’s is the equivalent of just a smidge over 61 cubic inches.
Since the current MX-3 has a base motor of 2.3 liters in engine displacement it would follow form and function to give cars that receive that motor the 2.3 or 2300 designation. It's all just numbers. :-) |

Random Names: R/T 3000 (wait that's Dodge, rats!), M/S 2000, Formula Mazda 3.0, SB Formula Mazda, Barber Mazda, "Pre-Star" Mazda, Barber Formula Mazda, etc.

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
No umbrage taken, Pat. Thought 'mazdaspeed' was generic for Mazda performance and read this earlier today:
http://www.cartype.com/page.cfm?id=1...ph=ALL&dec=ALL The article denies the existance of 'Mazdaspeed' and there's a link on the same page to see the Mazdaspeed3! Let this be a lesson to all. Turns out you can't believe everything you read on the internet! |

Couldn't find any good "Fordzilla" pix so will have to leave the photoshopping to Doug. Did find an entertaining thread on a truck site with a screen name "Fordzilla" in which the various uses of WD-40 are discussed. :eilims: Fordzilla weigh's in on WD-40
"Rosebud" was, of course, the mysterious dying words of John Foster Kane that turned out to be the famous sled we see being tossed into the furnace at the end of Orson Well's epic "Citizen Kane". It is a particularly appropriate choice for the car name as the inference is that "Rosebud" was the only object and activity that ever made him happy. |

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
We often refer to the 3-Day car as the "school car", and that keeps things simple. Why not adopt a similar approach for the new car, which will be used in the various Series? Using the first letter of the three series, we could have the "Mazda RMN Series Car", which would likely be referred to as the "Series" car. When anyone asked what the "RMN" stood for, it would be a good opportunity to discuss (and promote) the various racing series. That serves the purposes and needs of (a) the drivers, (b) Skippy, and (c) potential customers.

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
For those not old enough to have a "Citizen Kane" reference...
At the beginning of the film, after achieving national fame and fortune Kane dies alone in his mansion where he mouths "Rosebud..." (the lips still shot) as life is slipping away. He lets go of a snowglobe with a pastoral snowscape and it rolls off his bed and breaks on the floor. The whole film is a reporter's search for who or what "Rosebud" is and we are taken on the dramatic rollercoaster journey of his life. The reporter never figures it out but as the film ends we see workers hurling objects, of which there are more than can be counted, from his warehouse sized store room in his mansion called "Xanadu" into a furnace. The camera rolls up to the fire and reveals a single wooden sled with the name "Rosebud" on it being consumed by the flames, so the audience is shown the secret even though those in the story never learn it. Orson Wells directed it and played the lead roll in 1941. It was a breakthrough masterpiece of film making and cinematography at the time and Wells was 26 years old when he made it. William Randolph Hurst whose life story it was loosely based on did everything he could to stop its production but was not able to stop it. Wells had so much power, ego and success as a young man that he became a notoriously difficult control freak who fought bitterly for control of his future projects. He did make other interesting films ("Touch of Evil" being one) but never came close to matching the craft and power of Citizen Kane. And that kids is why the new car should be named "Rosebud" :D |

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
I had a pretty good idea why you proposed it Revere...
Spent an inordinate amount of time dissecting it in film school 30 years ago and just couldn't help myself. It was like visiting an old friend. Also wasn't sure how many of the younger members even know of its existance. Don't see it on cable anymore. Black & white doesn't get much play anywhere. Great craft in the black and white lighting and use of depth of focus. Black & white lighting is now a lost art. Very clever use of audio as well. Many creative ideas and devices that are still used all the time that first turned up in that film. Citizen Kane changed the way people approached the craft of film making in a similar way that Audi with its R8 LeMans car changed the way people approached the craft of endurance racing. Except at LeMans when you make an advance that sets you apart from the crowd they outlaw it. In Hollywood they clip your wings by taking away creative control. It's always something. :D Quote:

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
I can only imagine where the initials BM can lead... From a marketing perspective, it's probably a good thing that the R/T's weren't called SBD's for the same reason.
Everyone is here b/c they want to drive fast. The new names should at the very least sound fast. I personally think that having "Formula" in the name makes the cars no less the 40mph faster, so anything starting w/ "Formula" would have my vote. It also seems that the lower the number the faster the car ie. Formula 1 vs. Formula 3. It should be somehting cool so that when people hear it they get excited. BTW, is this for the new cars or the existing? I think that we should maintain some part of the old designation until the "new" cars are implemented into the fleet so there is a clear distinction between the two. The new name (for the old car) could be SB Formula Mazda 2000 and when the new cars arrive they can be something like: Formula SB Mazda Z Formula SB Mazda 2xxx (liter or cc) Formula SB Mazda Speed SB Mazda Formula Z (z for zoom) SB Formula Mazda 2.3 (for liter or cc) SB Mazda Formula Speed Barber Formula Mazda SB Speed Formula Mazda and of course: SB Formula Mazda almost pro series I think we should get a list of serious possibilities together and then poll for everyone's opinions. |

Yeah, I wondered when somebody was going to come up with the symbolic reading of "Rosebud." "It," according to some scholars, was a part of the female anatomy.

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
David,
In calling the R/T's "The Skip Barber Formula 2000", no mention of new Mazda sponsorship and no statement of a pending engine swap is indicated... The statement in the press release leaves lots of room for interpretation. Perhaps the new car decision will be "soon" enough to mean the R/T's will be retired with their hard working Dodge motors in place while being ultimately swapped out with entirely brand new Mazda powered racecars next year? What isn't being said seems to be speaking louder than what is... On the other hand there may be pallets of Mazda motors arriving in Lakeville, Sebring and other locations for quick installation as we write... Any Zoom Zoom motor crates stacked up anywhere? Inquiring minds want to know... :D Quote:

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
If swapping out the entire fleet is being considered then the first step would be test mating one of the Mazda motors to an R/T to evaluate mechanical issues. In considering the partnership with Mazda this may have already been done.

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
I heard that the original pairing of the current chassis with the Dodge motor in 2000 (?) didn't go smoothly at all. Lots of MDNF's, etc. I'm new to this game, and wasn't around for another few years, so a series vet may have more info on this as a historical precedent.

Re: Please Help Us Rename the R/T 2000
De-hijacking this thread for a moment... Lee Englebardt, before departing for Europe on business, sent a partially completed top 10 list of new names for the series and cars, asking me to flesh it out and pass it along... So I have. (Bravo Lee! :rotflmao: :D)
Top Ten new names for the Skippy series and cars. 10. Formula Winston - Sure it's not PC to smoke but they've got boatloads of cash that Nascar doesn't want anymore and Winston could write a check for the entire cost of the new Skippy race-car fleet on what used to be Nascar's meal money per-diem. 9. "Formula Juan" - You're probably thinking legend Juan Manuel Fangio, but the sole purpose of this series naming is to increase your odds at the singles bar. After a couple of drinks when "That special someone you'll never see again..." asks what kind of cars you race... You can raise an eyebrow and with complete honesty coo in your best sultry euro-trash accent... "Ohh... I race in Formula Juan...". 8. "Cannonball Barber" - Fast, powerful, explosive, and completely out of control once launched -- just the way most of us drive. 7. The Sid Brenner "Legend" series. Like parallel aspects of Sid's life, this series involves six hours of begging for ten minutes of seat time... 6. "Scuderia Toro Testicoli" - Virile! Risoluto! Forza! Ravioli! What the hell is a red bull, anyway? 5. "Formula Cosmo" - This was supposed to be a tribute to the 1968 Mazda 110S Cosmo Sport, the company's first rotary-engine race-car, but has sadly been axed due to the unfortunate association with the first name of a popular fictional TV show character on Seinfeld (Cosmo Kramer) who's real life actor suffered a recent turrets-syndrome like racial epithet strewn rant when heckled on stage that earned him rebukes from Reverend Al Sharpton and a public therapy/repentance session with Jesse Jackson. Opps! 4. "Formula Skippy" - The healthiest, smoothest, best tasting racing on the planet that doesn't stick to the roof of your mouth!" 3. "The World of In-Law's" "Dash" cars - The "Formula" name has been over-used so rename the series to honor the thousands who, after watching family members race, then use many dashes while exclaiming, "That no-good, good-for-nothing, s--t-head, meshugge son-in-law of ours is spending our grandchildren's college money on those dumb-ass little race-cars again!" 2. "Formula Ponce de León" and the "Fountain of Youth" cars. While originally intended only as a masters and grand masters series it turns out this series both matures the young and youthify's the old giving everyone exactly what they need once they feel, first-hand, the magic spell of its zoomy little race-cars. 1. "Formula Juicy" Hard to improve on perfection and you can have any flavor you want! |

Here's a VERY BIG tip of the hat to DalyDuo for the posting above. To paraphrase a line from Annie Hall, when I sent it to Pat it was just a notion, but I knew if I could get some funding it could be turned into a concept and then maybe into an idea ... Pat turned it into a finished product. Bravo!
Sy, thanks for the good wishes. I have been making a thorough and intensive study of European hotel rooms and airport lounges, and I can conclusively report that the pretzels are better in Frankfurt than in London. But in Brussels they put better chocolates on your pillow. You heard it here first. |
